saw 'The Resident' last week

Saw a "work-in-progress" cut of The Resident last week at West L.A.'s Landmark Theatre. Interestingly, Hammer Films have produced a grown-up thriller; a very well-made movie that can compete with any high-profile Hollywood production. It's a movie that picks up where old psychological Hammer movies left off, yet it's utterly modern and extremely suspenseful & well-acted & skillfully managed to get under my skin again & again (even though the story itself is not especially original - think Panic Room, Red Eye...). Also, there's an occasional creepiness, that defies convention as it's both funny and extremely disturbing. And who would ever have expected to see another Hammer production starring Christopher Lee?

reply

Glad to hear some positivity.

Can I ask, how was Lee Pace in the film? Thanks.

reply

since he wasn't very essential to the story, i hardly paid attention to him. his moments on the screen were fleeting, but i believe that he (or rather the character) should've played a bigger role (towards the end of the movie). that being said, i do recall my friend mentioning, that the role should've been played by "a better looking actor"...

reply

Thanks for replying!

I had a feeling he didn't really play a big part in the story anyhow. I'm guessing he plays the love interest, judging from the stills released.

Can I also ask whether there is nudity, lots of violence/gore and how would you compare it to other psycho thrillers released? Thankyou!

reply

there wasn't too much gore or nudity. there's quite a bit of violence (especially towards the end). i think the movie fares well compared to similar recent movies of the psychological thriller genre. sorry, but don't have the time to get into more details...

Can you tell us more about Hilary Swank's character? Can you tell us some of the things the landlord does to her? How does he get obsessed with her

reply

WARNING! CONTAINS SPOILERS!
don't want to give away too much, but in one of the more amusing scenes, he uses her toothbrush on his own teeth, hoping that she'll subliminally get used to his scent. he continuously drugs her at night and then (possibly - this is not quite clear) rapes her while she's sleeping. there's a disturbing scene, when she starts waking up during one of those encounters...
i won't say how he gets obsessed with her, but about 30-40 min. into the film, we saw a flashback that explained how he first got obsessed with her. i think it was also suggested that hillary swank wasn't the first of his victims...

reply

Ohhhh! Thanks for the reply. Pleeease tell us more. Can you tell us more about Hilary Swank? How was she in the role? What does she do???

I just wanna set you on fire so I won't have to burn alone

reply

What of Mr. lee's role, does he have a decent amount of screen time????

reply

No, Christopher Lee has hardly any screen time. His role is almost like a cameo.

reply

That's disappointing to hear. I knew he wasn't actually starring in the film, but just a cameo? I should have expected it as much. The producers have been making it out to seem as if he has a decent supporting role. Shame

At long last BLADE RUNNER: FINAL CUT !

IMDb needs to get rid of the "Sponsored Links" section.

reply

Also disappointed, Christopher Lee saved Hammer studios, along with fans like us who wanted it back, and all he gets is a cameo? For shame indeed!

does Michael Massee have a big part?
