Things that didn't make sense in the movie!

Found three things that didnt make much sense in this film, hope someone can clear them up?

-Why did she get a security system, nothing really happened yet for her to think someone was in her apartment

-Why did she suspect max did something to her ex? The scene where shes talking to max in the kitchen she randomly asks him "Where is he?". How would she know he was harmed or in trouble?

-When she finds the cap to the needle...how would she know she needs a blood test? I feel like that finding wasnt evidence enough

reply

1- She heard noises a couple of times and had the feeling that there was something weird with the apartment. That's why she got the security system

2- She saw the stuff the ex had bought for dinner. That way she knew the ex had been in the apartment.

3- She had overslept a few times when she never did in the past. By finding the cap, she suspected that she didn't hear the alarm clock was because she might had been drugged.

What was the purpose of bringing in the dog? There was no reason that I can think of, and it seemed totally random.

Why was such a big deal made about the vibrations from the trains? There were 2 or 3 instances where it seemed like they were focusing on it by showing stuff on the sink vibrating, etc. I see no reason why this was done either.

Where were the other tenants of the building? He asked why she would give her ex a key to his "building." She was clearly on at least the 2nd or higher floor. Christopher Lee lived on the same floor as her. Where were the other tenants? Was he spying on them also, and why didn't they come to her aid when all the ruckus started?

Why did I sit through the whole movie?

reply

There were scenes that didn't make it into the final cut for budget reasons. There were probably more scenes with the dog. But it was there for the suspense of Max being discovered since the dog would gravitate to anyone who was in the house who it hadn't met yet.

The train scenes were to distract from or cover up any suspicions Julie may have had about noises she heard.

The Christopher Lee character was his grandfather. He obviously knew Max was a weak, sick pervert and made mention of his father being the same way. He probably refused to turn in his own grandson knowing he'd have no one to take care of him.

Because you're a glutton for punishment or maybe you just deserve it.

Your response to #3 has nothing to do with what I asked. LOL

The way I understood it, that was the family house. He only set it up as an apartment once he got obsessed with her and manipulated her into renting it.

The train vibrations were pointed out to her as one of the reasons the rent was so cheap to assuage any suspicions she might have had.

reply

The train vibrations also served to show the audience that there were something buggy with the apartment (the bathroom windows bouncing on the wall indicating that there was something behind, windows closing by themselves).

If you remember, the landlord insisted that she have no pets. The scene where the dog sniffs him out in the closet is a perfect example of why he didnt want her to have any pets. Telling her she couldnt have pets was foreshadowing that he would be sneaking around in the walls. Dogs obviously pick up on these things and would have screwed up his peeping plans. Franks dog proved this.
The train was just camoflauge for what he was doing in the walls. When she heard noises, she was able to blame them on the train.

"Momma told me not to come."

My theory is that there were no other tenants in the apartment. He told her that the building had been in his family for years but at the same time he never said anything about the other tenants.

He obviously had enough time and privacy to renovate the entire floor to be able to watch her from any room in her apartment so there must not have been any other people besides his grandfather and himself on the floor.

And I don't recall her running into anyone else in the building in the elevator or in the lobby.

I had the impression that his grandfather had been up to the same caper before his stroke. Max says something about how they had previously run the building together.

So the grandfather had probably been a peeping tom for years, and showed Max the tricks of the trade. But Max took it to another level (to the max, in fact).

Interesting theory. And there was that scene when Hillary stopped by the grandfather's place to thank him for the welcome basket and he said something a little strange like "I don't get many visitors" or something like that and Christopher Lee made the line so creepy.

However I'm not sure I really think he was a peeping tom too. I got the impression that he knew Max was disturbed and was trying to stop him from doing anything to the girl.

They had been running the place together for years and it seems it was only once the old man became incapacitated that Max was able to indulge his sicko perversions. Otherwise the building may have been littered with the bodies of other poor unsuspecting women - and we saw no evidence of that (at least I didn't notice any...)

Also Max actually killed his grand father in the end saying something like "it's my life" or "it's time for me to live my life now" Why would he need to get rid of the old man unless he felt he wasn't free to do as he pleased?

Look at this, it's a nighty. She would look sexy in that, you'd look like a moose!

reply

I think the whole thing with the train is that toward the end it showed that he only snuck into her apartment when the train was passing by so the sound of the train would mask the sound of the floor creaking when he walked.

I think they wanted to give a clue that the mirror was in front of a hole in the wall.

It was probably a two way mirror. But they didnt show that (IIRC) to retain the element of surprise when he jumped through. (Although, the clue was so obvious, it spoiled the surprise).

She saw the boyfriend come into the apartment and now he's not there and this creep is creeping around.

Why did Max turn her away when she made advances toward him? He already seemed obsessed with her?

Why did she shunt Max away so coldly after lunging all over him so early on, and lust after the ex she'd just refused to speak with?

1. He was playing her. He wanted her to believe his intentions were noble and chivalrous.

2. She was confused. She didn't want a rebound relationship and thought it was too soon to display those same feelings she had for her ex especially since she had gotten hurt. She hadn't healed emotionally yet though her body was yearning.

reply

Ah! Thanks for the reply. I hadn't thought of him trying to appear chivalrous. Boy, that method backfired on him ultimately didn't it?

I thought Max was a complete psycho, a horrible man, but I felt momentarily bad for him when Juliet refused him so completely after literally throwing herself at him in bed.
And the way she dumped him was kind of sudden & cold too. She barely explained anything to him, acted like nothing significant had happened.

Things that didn´t make any sense:

Why doesn´t she just call the police after she fights of Jeffrey Dean Morgan? She has her phone and it obviously works since she receives a call with it. Instead she runs to her computer and tries to send an email? I´m not a cop but I believe that sending an email to the police IS NOT the best way to get help.

reply

He wasn't trying to act chivalrous, he truly was surprised. He was not used to a woman paying attention to him. As he said, he was shy and all that. At no point has he been a liar. He didn't expect to get what he wanted so easily.

Remember when he said that he thought she would get him out of the walls? He thought she was "the one" and became obsessed with her, and the fact that she showed him a little attention did not help.

Note to women: if you ever encounter a creepy guy that may be obsessed with you, do not show him any attention even if that seems funny at the moment.

SPOILERS, SPOILERS, SPOILERS

"Why did she suspect max did something to her ex? The scene where shes talking to max in the kitchen she randomly asks him "Where is he?". How would she know he was harmed or in trouble?"

...
Nobody else mentioned this and correct me if I am wrong, but she already suspects Max (after getting her lab results), when she calls her BF on her cell running from the hospital "don't go to the apartment!". Then she gets home, sees the bag of groceries, bottle of wine...and no BF.[/spoiler]

THEN she sees "messages" from ADT on her computer, and proceeds to WATCH THE SURVEILLANCE of Max raping her. At which point enters Max into her apartment with a bottle of wine, like everything is 'normal' (which is clearly isn't by this point). She quickly switches off the computer and has to 'pretend' she is okay, now suspecting Max is behind this, seeing him rape her. When Max starts ramping up, she knows to ask "where is he" referring to the BF. .
That's my take and recall of it.

The cap lying there was a slip up on Max's part and made her wonder what it was doing there. Since she didn't wear her scrubs to and from work, I can assume that she didn't keep medical supplies in her pockets and cart them home.

Other things that don't make sense:

Max is apparently spending all day in her apartment where her laptop is open on the desk and he never bothers to take a look and learn that she has a security system.

Security system covers everything except her kitchen and bathroom - exactly where her stalker is lurking the most.

Max tells her the cell phone service isn't great yet she never had a problem making a call until she needs to call the police.

reply

-Why did she get a security system, nothing really happened yet for her to think someone was in her apartment

Various things happened to make her feel uncomfortable and suspicious. If she genuinely believed someone was entering her apartment, then she'd have moved out. She thought she was just being silly, and put in the equipment to give herself peace of mind.

-Why did she suspect max did something to her ex? The scene where shes talking to max in the kitchen she randomly asks him "Where is he?". How would she know he was harmed or in trouble?

The guy phoned to say he was going to her apartment. Then he didnt answer his phone (we saw her ring once, but it's likely she tried a few times). Then she saw him on the video recording entering her apartment.

-When she finds the cap to the needle...how would she know she needs a blood test? I feel like that finding wasnt evidence enough

She's a doctor. She knows what the object is. Why else do people use hypodermics apart from to inject drugs? She probably hadnt previously suspected any date rape drug was being used on her. But, as a doctor, she would know the symptoms. As soon as she saw the cap, she would realise that she'd had those symptoms for some time.
