Rent prices
Obviously the apartment in the movie is amazing and a steal (disregarding the stalker) but is $3800 considered cheap?

shareI gasped at that price but in NYC apparently it's not that high. She was a doctor but not in private practice but on a hospital staff - I wonder what kind of salary she made to think that $3800 was a bargain.
I'm a Balehead forever!!!share
I live in NYC (Manhattan to be exact) and $3800 is not considered cheap to me!! It is however very expensive to live here and if you're a millionaire and you'd want to live in Mid-Town to Upper West Side then $3800 for that much space would be considered good. But for the average NYer that's a lot of money

It's a good price for something that large.
shareI was wondering about that price myself. What is such a bargain about $3800? Even considering the size of the apartment, I wouldn't call that a 'bargain'. Also, I didn't think ER doctors earned that much, even in NYC.

Im renting a 3 bedroom house with a pool, and its only 1000 a month
You hate us 'cause we're beautiful, Well we don't like you either
What region of the U.S. do you live? I travel a lot, and I've noticed in some places the rent is reasonable for what they're asking and not so much in others, you have to consider that if someone is renting out a house they have to charge rent that also covers the the taxes on the place, and again taxes very on real estate depending on the location even in the same state, cities and counties.
Where i live I've seen 3 bedroom houses rent from $900.00 to $3500 or more but it depends on the neighborhood, and what a local government charges in real estate taxes for a residence . Where I live people who live in unincorporated areas tend not to pay as much in sales taxes, and estate taxes.
Movies will make you famous; Television will make you rich; But theatre will make you good.
Her character is not just an M.D., but also a trauma surgeon. That probably increases her salary quite a bit, esp. in a NYC hospital.
shareResidents (who are still in TRAINING and cannot practice outside of a hospital, without supervision) make very little, comparatively speaking (in NY, perhaps $40,000-50,000/yr). But they work AT LEAST 90 - 110 hrs/wk. But there are staff physicians, who make TONS (and don't have private practices). One of my Dad's clients (he's a tax lawyer) is the Chief of Colorectal Surgery at a prestigious hospital in NYC, and he makes roughly 1,000,000.00/yr (though he works a million hrs, by choice unlike residents or fellows, who have to, in order to complete their training).
I have to work three months to earn that kind of money!
shareIncredible: She can afford a $3800/month appartment, but drinks cheap Jose Cuervo (around 46:50 mark)
shareShe also has Ikea furniture.
I lived in NYC for 6 years, and yes, $3800 for a place that size in Brooklyn that close to the bridge is a steal. I was paying $1300 for a 200sq ft Jr 1BR on the Upper East Side in Manhattan 5 years ago and $1700 for a place a 1BR in Riverdale in the Bronx 2 years ago.
Thank you everybody for your views and explanations. Apparently $3.800 is considered suitable for an apartment of that size in Brooklyn. That I also would have expected. But a steal? In the movie when he named the price at "38" she assumed he meant $38.000. Now THAT I thought was crazy!
shareNo, not in Brooklyn, but in that specific area of Brooklyn, right by Manhattan Bridge. Prices there are almost as high as in Manhattan.
And the place was like a friggin' palace - how many rooms did she even have in her apt?? And each of them was enormous! And those high ceilings - it was almost like a loft.
And she had a balcony - also rare. All those windows are pretty incredible. I barely have any light in my studio apt at all.
You'd be lucky to find a studio in a decent neighborhood in Brooklyn for around $1000. So you can extrapolate from there.
The thing I found completely unrealistic (apartment-wise) was the language of her "apartment wanted" ad. There is no way anyone would have even read it, let alone be interested in offering anything after reading her list of demands. There are many more people than good apartments in NYC.
Wow, my studio apt is almost 600 sq.ft., and I think it's small! I can't even imagine what 200 sq.ft. would feel like.
That's, like, the size of my kitchen.
Sadly, many people believe that Jose Cuervo is premium Tequila, much like many believe that Santa Margherita is good quality Pinot Grigio.
Marketing goes a long way.

That was a pretty big apartment, but old. Depending on what part of the island, I've seen everything from $1,500 to $5,000 but this didn't seem to be one of the high end areas of town or buildings. I would say $3,800 is probably not a steal for that apartment, but who knows. Does anyone know what part of the island this was on from referencing the landmarks out the windows?
Bam said the lady.
The apartment was located in Dumbo (Brooklyn). Dumbo is one of the most expensive places to live in Brooklyn. The sheer size of the apartment alone would indicate that this is the type of apartment you buy, not rent. $3800/month is a STEAL. There are apartments 1/4 that size that go for more in the same area.

$3800 is a steal. I pay $3500 for an apartment that's probably a quarter of that size (if that). Apts in my building that are similar in size (and age) to the apartment in the movie go for between $11000-16000 per month (and it's not a super high-end building, but is nice). Her apt appears to be in Dumbo Brooklyn, a pretty trendy area.
shareI can find a 2 bedroom apart in Phoenix area of Arizona for $700-$900. My sister-in-laws are in a ghetto type apartment area in NY and are paying like 1300 a month for 2 bedroom. The apartment is only about 700-800sq ft. I live in a 1900 sq-ft home in Glendale, AZ and pay $1050 a month. This is why I moved from the East-Coast to Arizona. More space, better air quality, no snow and cheaper housing.
shareJust because you can find an apartment cheaper somewhere else does not mean anything. Living in Chicago, I have seen rent as cheap as 700 or as much as 20k for the same size apartment, depending on where it is located.
shareYou cannot compare NYC and its tri state are and boroughs price of housing with anywhere else. Maybe San Fransisco. People are right that apartment is suppose to be in Brooklyn in a section called DUMBO meaning Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. Old industrial area with a million very large lofts. It is very very expensive because it is right next to Manhattan. It is bargain to live there then in Manhattan if you can believe it. You get a lot more space for your money. A lot of younger families with babies live in the area. Heath Ledger when he was married lived in Brooklyn in the Boerum Hill area. Parts are very expensive because of its convenience and brownstones which are huge houses that are broken into apartments are just left alone as one family houses. Only Brooklyn and parts of Harlem have Brownstones. And btw lots of Harlem has been gentrified too and you will see rents like that too also. I lived in plenty of places but I was raised on Long Island and worked in NYC. I am shocked to see how cheap it is to live in other parts of country. But the people who live there do not think it is cheap.
shareJust goes to show you how dumb people are. paying that kind of money for an appartment, just so you can say you live in down town NY. 450 sq ft is pretty tiny. Much better to live outside of the city (even though home prices are still overblown - $400K just gets you an average home. In her situation I can understand more so..... she's a surgeon, so she needs to be "on call" so living outside of the city doesn't make practial sense. But to the average joe who just works in NYC. Moronic.
