Just because Lucas HAS The Right to twist, turn and change his (let's face it; historically important) movies, does not mean that he IS right in doing so.
He might be by Copyright Law entitled to do whatever he wants with the Star Wars saga, but I can't help thinking that somewhere along the way he got completely lost inside his own head, and decided that he had now reached a position where pleasing himself was more important than pleasing all those who helped put him in that position.
He seems full of himself, sure. Of course, he had reason to be proud of himself. He also created the Indiana Jones universe, which is impressive in itself. If Roddenberry had lived long enough to see Star Trek's success, he might've become a douche too.

No one is debating that he can do whatever he wants. Fans are just saying it's not a very considerate thing to do to the people who made him what he is. Someone can chop down a 100 year old tree on their property because they don't like raking leaves (true story in the news last night). It's their call. No law against being a douchebag. No shit, Sherlock. He can tinker with them all he wants, but there is absolutely no justifiable reason in hell why the OT can't still be made available as well. This is exactly what Spielberg realized and rectified with E.T. after he made the decision to make the original 1982 cut available along with the 2002 Anniversary Edition with all the changes. This gave FANS the opportunity to choose their preferred version of the movie. Spielberg is a guy who gets it and appreciates the fans.
But Luca$, pfft, he wants to deny the existence of the beloved OT and force feed his preferred version to all the loyal fans. I'm sorry but that is flat out WRONG & a complete douchebag thing to do. Plain and simple.
The original is available on DVD and VHS, so what are you crying about?

Yeah, well the Star Wars fandom is bursting with looney-tubes who think that they own the franchise and dictate what should be done with the intellectual property.
Which is fifty kinds of bullshit. Not only do Lucas and Disney own the legal rights, and require the creative freedom to advance the story as they see fit... These films were NOT made for the fans! These films were made for the MAINSTREAM! No, really. All the wackdoodles have managed to block that out of their minds, but it's the truth. These films were made for large general audiences.
Of course it would be nice if Lucas paid as much attention to fandom issues and preferences as Peter Jackson did when making the Tolkien films, but as you can see from the mess that was the "Hobbit" trilogy, pandering to a fandom doesn't mean the results will be good.
