Yeah, well the Star Wars fandom is bursting with looney-tubes who think that they own the franchise and dictate what should be done with the intellectual property.
Which is fifty kinds of bullshit. Not only do Lucas and Disney own the legal rights, and require the creative freedom to advance the story as they see fit... These films were NOT made for the fans! These films were made for the MAINSTREAM! No, really. All the wackdoodles have managed to block that out of their minds, but it's the truth. These films were made for large general audiences.
Of course it would be nice if Lucas paid as much attention to fandom issues and preferences as Peter Jackson did when making the Tolkien films, but as you can see from the mess that was the "Hobbit" trilogy, pandering to a fandom doesn't mean the results will be good.
