i love this type of film (demonic child and/or exorcisms, satanists or cults and the occult), so if anyone knows of other similar films, could you please let me know.
i have seen: rosemary's baby the wicker man rec the exorcist exorcism of emily rose lost souls (not so good) the reaping the omen 1-3
for a recent movie check out 'house of the devil'. it is a very much a throw back to films like rosemary's baby, and although slow paced i thought it was enjoyable.
The only good thng about Emily Rose was Jennifer Carpenter. The rest of that movie was overdone. The courtroom scenes and her lawyer and the priest's storylines were as bad and dumbed down as a Lifetime Channel movie. Shoreh Agdashaloo's expert testimony scene is ridiculous and excruciating to sit through.
The problem I had with Exorcism Of Emily Rose was that it was advertised as a horror movie akin to other exorcism movies, but it was more of a courtroom drama. Expectations are a very powerful factor in one's enjoyment of a film. I want looking for a courtroom drama when I rented it. I was looking for a very suspenseful and disturbing story.
Okay.. To help you out with pretty obscure stuff that slots somewhere between exorcism and the devil. One thing I can guarantee you about these films is that they will all get deeply under your skin. These are also in line with the mood of The Last Exorcism, especially the weird cult in the country vibe.
First: Requiem... A German film (yes with subtitles) that is a variation on the same story as the Exorcism of Emily Rose. It too is quite creepy, if more skeptical of exorcism than Emily Rose.
Second:Calvaire. Unbelievably crazed French film about totally demented French villagers. (Subtitles)
Next: Population 436 - Another sinister small town in nowhere America with a strange curse. Creepy.
The Strangers - Not an occult film, but something in the mood of this film was similar to the last third of The Last Exorcism. And this is the most frightening film I'm going to mention.
Borderland - Based on a true story of an occult sect of drug dealers in Mexico and an American who gets caught by them. This is based on the Matomoros cult from several years back. Brutally fearsome and well done. (It's in English.)
The Nameless - A Spanish (subtitles) cult film that builds with real intensity. This film delivers the goods as many times as I've seen it.
Dagon - Set in Spain but mostly in English. It's an H.P. Lovecraft story. The cult here is truly over the edge. And in the end you meet the god they worship. The pay off here is absolutely unique.
Finally if you want to see a truly occult film watch the Polish film The Saragossa Manuscript. It's hard to find. And you shouldn't watch this unless you digested quite a few other strange films. But this one has elements that you will never see in another film. Dreams within dreams. Stories within stories within stories. It's not a normal film. It's definitely NOT for people who just need blood or action. But it will turn your head inside out. (In Polish with subtitles.)
Once you tracked these down you can move on to Begotten or Santa Sangre with real trepidation.

Thanks for these. That last line was also pretty funny. reply share
The Devil's Rain Race With The Devil Beyond the Door The Tempter The Night Child House of Exorcism (although the non-exorcism version, Lisa & The Devil, is better) Mephisto Waltz
Try Del Toro's trilogy of Cronos, The Devil's Backbone, and Pan's Labyrinth. Another good one about occultism (voodoo in this case) is The Serpent and the Rainbow (great atmosphere and imagery). For an effective ghost story you can check out The Changeling (1980). An oft overlooked but fun flick is Spellbinder. Lots of culty goodness and a nice twist ending.
