Well as far as English language movies go (since that's all the Oscars pick for best picture), Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Artist were my two favorites, but I don't know if I could put Rise above The Artist. Tough call.

This is an above average solid blockbuster, i agree. But it is definitely not better than all of the nominees.

The nominees were great films, Rise was great entertainment

Agreed, I caught some of it last night playing on regular TV and had forgotten how great it is (and superior to the 2 sequels Dawn/War)

At the time it was almost a revelation a POTA film could be that good (coming after the disappointing Burton remake, and most of the original Apes sequels) and it did massive box office (500m when that was still thought of as huge), not only was it a great origin/prequel to POTA (kind of a remake of Conquest and some parts of the original film) but it was a great sci fi movie in its own right. All the actors were great in it and interesting to watch especially Lithgow as the dementia suffering father. and Serkis as Caesar was entirely convincing. It all felt real. The action finale was amazing and it set up/foreshadowed what was to come brilliantly

It should've been granted a best pic nomination bc really it had no right to be as good as it was (like Top Gun Maverick which had a best pic nom), Serkis and Lithgow should've been nominated as well (the only nomination it got was for FX)
