uniform

in what part of australia fo they allow the students to wear any clothes they want to? even as a senior at my school we were still made to wear uniforms.

Spencer: why can't you accept me for who i am
Paula: because who you are is not acceptable

reply

I'm in the US and uniforms are rare here except in private schools. I rarely see uniforms in schools portrayed on film unless they are Japanese students or at a private/religious school. I guess what I'm saying is nothing seemed strange about it to me. Are uniforms that common in Australian schools?

reply

Yes, uniforms are common in Australian schools. In fact, they're compulsory. I've never heard of an Australian school not having uniforms.

I'm from Canada and for one year of high school I went to a school where we had mandatory uniforms. That being said, once a month we had a day where you could donate money to the school's selected charity and you'd be able to wear regular clothes for that day. Not sure if there is the same in Australia but if there is, perhaps as it is end of the year in the movie, they had one such day.

There's at least one school in my town where uniforms aren't compulsory. But that school is renowned for scumbags. Even though i know of some people who went there that aren't, but that was for zoning reasons

The tv show Heart Break High was set in Sydney and had no uniforms.

reply

I've lived in Australia for 20 years, and no, I haven't seen or heard of any high schools where uniforms are not compulsory. There is something called 'free dress day', where you can donate a dollar or two to a particular charity or cause, and you get to wear what you want for the day (with restrictions- no bare midriffs or short shorts/skirts etc.), so maybe it was a day like that in the movie.

reply

Considering it looks like the last days of high school, it could possibly have been a mufti day.
