As A Non Partisan Hack Who Hates Democrats & Republicans Equally
I thought it was a good movie.
It wasn't as good as the first. The first was one of the funniest movies of all-time and it was new, fresh, and radical in it's approach.
This one, you kinda know what to expect going in from Baron Cohen.
I will say, that the actress who plays his daughter absolutely steals the movie. She's able to go from despair to elation while playing the perfect foil to the comedic veteran. I think she is going to be a huge star in the near future.
The movie is obviously very anti-Trump and heavy-handedly so. Even though I'm no fan of the guy, I'm a little annoyed of Hollywood constantly hitting me over the head with their disdain for the guy. It's like, "we get it, you don't like him. But also, it's like "If Trump was so bad, then why were all of you such good friends with him for so many years? Why be in his TV shows, beauty pageants, and invite him to all your good Hollywood/Manhattan parities if you hate him so much?"
At the same time, he is the president, and there is absolute value in making fun of the president, no matter who he is & what party he's in, because there's value in bringing our elected officials down a peg.
Obviously, everybody has biases and I'm not a believer that you always have to make fun of both sides equally, but there is a thin line between having a point of view that comes out in your work (which everyone has) and purposely making a hit piece for the purpose of affecting the outcome of an election and the release of this right before the election obviously shows that it is in part that.
Overall, the best parts of the movie are the ones that aren't heavy-handed, like in the cellphone store, during the cotillion, the scenes with his daughter are almost all great, at the plastic surgeon's office, and I love the scenes with professional babysitter Jeanise Jones, who somehow brought a down to earth compassion to the ridiculousness that Borat & his daughter brought to her.
The worst parts of the film were the ones where it felt like they were picking on the slow kids in class, like the QAnon people and the country fans, who some (I'm not saying all country fans are stupid) seemed to be at the least mentally disturbed and at worst just out and out retarded.
It's just unfortunate that we've gotten to a place that we can't just have comedy anymore without all this political and cultural baggage that goes with it, but it is what it is.
Borat II's a really funny movie that isn't as perfect as the first because it's made in a time that won't allow it to be as funny as the first.
