Saw this the other night
Was excited to see this after reading all those Twit-reviews from Sundance, especially about Dane DeHaan. While DeHaan himself was very good, the film was not so much. It’s a mix between Ginsberg’s complicated relationship with Lucien Carr and a murder story. The screenplay had some very cheesy scenes (visiting the mother and asking for advice) and lines. The acting was great and I didn’t recognize it was Ben Foster all along. But it had some pretty great scenes like the hallucination scene and the library breaking scene. The period details were great and it had nice soundtracks and music from Nico Muhly I believe.
Bonus: Krokidas wanted Radcliffe for the part but he was tied with the last two Harry Potter films. Then Krokidas offered Jesse Eisenberg. But then The Social Network was released and Eisenberg didn’t want to play another Ivy League college kid. When things came together for the film to start, Radcliffe was fortunately available again.
The film was picked up by Sony Classic and Krokidas said the studio is planning to release the film during the fall thinking the film has some awards potential.
