One thing that kind of bothers me is, all the actors look so neat and clean.
Ferlengetti(spelling?) commented that in the film, Last Time I Committed Suicide, that all the actors were too clean...well frankly, there was nothing clean about the actors or their characters so I have no idea what he was talking about. Of couse we have only seen a few snap shots of the actors on the set of Darlings but they do look awfully pressed and clean. The clothing also looks a little upscale and even though some of these characters come from money, fact is, while they were living in New York they drank most of their money from home and they were not making high wages, so I'm thinking the director should not have dressed them like models.
I don't know if you've seen the pics from filming at Columbia U, but there is a mix of clean and messy clothing. There are scenes which are obviously Ginsberg's first day at Uni where everyone is well dressed but then there are evening scenes between Ginsberg and Kammerer where Ginsbergis pretty disheveled and not nearly as nicely dressed. I think we are seeing scenes where they are out and about and I think people dressed to go out in those days including to class but I think the scenes in dorm rooms, bars etc might be different.
Incidentally if you click on one of the embedded links in the NYTimes article there is some old video footage of the friends hanging out with wives/girlfriends/kids that is interesting.
