The bar scene should have been edited out.

I thought the weakest and most annoying segment of this movie was the silly bar scene where Dodge celebrates his birthday. Watching all the young wait staff act zany and goofy ruined my hopes for this to be a sincere drama.

I mean, come on! Do we really need to see a gaggle of Generation Y kids kiss and hug each other like there is no tomorrow? This scene dragged on far too long. It should have been edited down to no more than 5 minutes in length and could have been executed much better.

LOL at people not knowing what Molly is.

I thought the bar scene was funny but also a great way of showing how some people would deal being in that situation. It was zany and weird but thats what happens when you know the world is going to end.

That is the dumbest and most ignorant statement I have ever read. not everybody is a worthless drug user.

reply

LOL at people thinking you have to be a worthless drug user to know what Molly is. Goodnight, grampa.

Expiration dates are mere suggestions! Like late fees and traffic lights.

reply

Talk about ignorant. Doing drugs does not make someone "worthless".
People can have knowledge of things without actually participating, you know?

"LOL at people not knowing what Molly is."

LOL I know! This is exactly how they would act! Especially with the kind of camaraderie of the waitstaff in places like this! That's what makes it so funny!

SPRING BREAK FOREVER BITCHES!

I suppose there are reasons for appreciating a scene like this. The main problem was how it was executed. The actors looked like they were forcing all this Hoo-Haw "Love-In" crap. If you knew the world was coming to an end in a few days, why even bother showing up at work?

The scene looked unnatural and stupid.

reply

What else were they going to do? Sit at home and cry about the end of the world? Maybe work and their work friends were all they had.

reply

I'm glad you pointed that out, because that was one of the most poignant things to me in this film. If everyone knows it's the end of the world and they're trying to "celebrate" yet still want to live, their so-called celebration will seem forced.

I don't think you understand that those people were all very high and were basically there to have orgies with each other. Waiting tables was just something they were doing in-between orgies.

LOL!

Sorry, that me laugh out loud. =)

Most people in the bar were CLEARLY on ecstasy. The way they acted, touching, kissing and oh yeah, the waitress saying that she was rolling hard. The scene was perfect and was a nice break from the dreariness of the rest of the film.

reply

This scene was hilarious, I don't think they were acting "goofy" or "zany", they were clearly drinking and doing drugs while pretending to work.

Oh.

I'm confused by the fact that some people don't seem to get that the "co-plot," the entire accompanying storyline of this movie is how people react to the end of the world coming. It is as blatant of a plot point as the main storyline. Therefore, this scene was just as important as any other scene in the movie to that plot point. They showed many other types of people and how they were reacting; this was basically the only scene showing the reaction by this group of people.

reply

Well said. This movie covered a pretty wide spectrum of reactions.

Mag, Darling, you're being a bore.

I thought the scene was important because it showed another version of how people react to the idea of the world ending. There would definitely be people behaving in that manner. I don't think it's just young people who would do that either. Many people would want to experience things that had been "taboo" just to enrich their overall life experience. You'd be surprised, I think, at who might respond this way. Some people would be brooding and introspective about what the end of days means, others on a quest to check off everything on their bucket lists, others waiting for the opportunity to take advantage of others. I think that the way a person responds when there are no consequences for their behavior is very telling about the kind of person they are.

I thought Friendsy's was great.

I agree it showed how some people reacted to the impending end of the world.

As others have noted, the movie showed a variety of reactions.

There was the maid, the TV newsman, the policeman and others, who kept doing their jobs until the very end.

There were those who partied as much as they could, which included not only the people at Friendsy's, but also some of Dodge's friends back home.

There were those who rioted.

There were those who became assassins, perhaps because they were people who wanted to killt. There was also Dodge's friend who went full-fledged sexual predator. It's also implied that some people were raping others.

There were those who simply wanted it over with and either killed themselves or hired someone to kill them.

There were those who turned to faith (as in the scene where it appeared a long line of people were getting baptized in the sea).

And there were those who went to spend their last moments with those they loved.
