As any honest person who has ever loved someone with all they had can attest, the person you think is the love of your life will almost always never have the same feelings for you.
So in that regard, finding love between Penny & Dodge does the story good. While there's still a heap of impracticality, at least the ending was in the scope of happy. (Even though in reality, being happy is a delusion.)
Being happy is not a delusion. It is an emotion brought on by an action or experience. Usually helping another person in some way. But also sometimes while lying on a bed looking at someone you love.
Just because the love of your life did not return it does not mean that requited love does not exist. It just means you are probably currently depressed.

Love can be something that grows between 2 people.
And if you feel strongly towards someone the chances are they'll feel the same way back.
