Future cult classic
On its release this was dismissed for reasons of poor comedy, and generally not living up to its billing. But this film was not marketed properly- it's not a comedy. It is a romantic drama. And under that guise it scores highly in my book. I am not a Keira Knightley fan at all, but (much like putting up with Minnie Driver in Grosse Pointe Blank) I could entertain her here because the subject matter was so poignant, and because Steve Carell gave such a genuine and moving performance. The soundtrack was perfectly picked out, and the script wasn't loaded with unnecessary heart warming crap. The scene when Dodge meets his Father was played so well without going into unnecessary detail. Our thoughts were left to fill in the details. Similarly the final scene between Steve Carell and Keira Knightley was played beautifully, without any unnecessary schmaltz- just an honest conversation between two people in a very unknown situation. I have never seen Steve Carrell act so honestly.
Those people who watch and judge this film as a comedy are watching the wrong film. This is actually a very moving drama and should be judged as such.
