There would be no trials.

There would be no jails (massive riots would result in mass breakouts and/or entire prison populations murdered by guards to prevent them all escaping.)

There would be no legal repercussions for any criminal activity. Any possible spiritual or religious repercussions might prevent some, but not as many people as you'd might think.

Too many people would act on their fantasies, some of them very, very bad, because there would be no punishment. Hate your boss with a passion? Go ahead and kill him; you won't go to trial or a jail. In fact, attacking someone might get you shot so you wouldn't have to wait for the end. Fantasized about that cute girl in the apartment across the hall? Go ahead and rape her if she says no because you won't go to jail for it. It would get much, much uglier from there....

There would be people doing good things, of course, but they'd be overwhelmed in a tide of raging human beings angry at God, the universe, aliens, the government or whoever they'd blame for what is happening. They'd start taking out their rage on every person in sight.

Unfortunately, we've seen mob mentality and the breakdown of societies before throughout history, and it would be one hundred times worse in this case.

Of course. No one has a crystal ball for these kind of things, but the rioting would be inevitable. Anarchy is the precursor to Armageddon.

I think overall, you would see an exacerbation of what is in the nature for each individual to do. This would result in extremes of both good and evil deeds, and then there will be those in the middle. Most would likely both take things for granted as well as embrace what they value most.

If the asteroid missed in the last few seconds and just glanced off, the police would have a helluva job arresting half the world's population. There'd have to be amnesties for all kinds of crimes. And then those still in jail would want amnesties, too. It would be chaos. Some people might have wished the asteroid would come back, like reverse gear or something.

Mass murder would be guaranteed.

But things would clear out in a few days.

I can't comment on mass murder, but I personally would hunt down every slimey, crooked politician I could find and blow them away.

There are many amateur astronomers around the world who would see this huge asteroid coming to hit the Earth. They would tell everyone as to what they discovered long before the government would. That's one of the advantages of the internet is we have instant news stories and an asteroid about to hit the Earth is big news.

Are you doing something desperate? Something we can't clean up this time?

Bad things are happening now, and the end isn't in sight.

Call me Mr. Brightside here... but I really don't think that the only thing stopping 99% of people from killing their boss/neighbor/ex, or, violently raping the cutie across the street as she fights against you to stop, is the fact that they would go to prison for it.

Are there individuals who might do such a thing? Sure, there are individuals who do those things now even with a full life ahead of them. I just don't think the vast majority of people are going to flip a switch and go from taxpaying citizens to violent rapists overnight though.

I'm not in any way suggesting at all that things would in any way be business as usual... but there's a large gap between some looting/partying/drug abuse/promiscuity/YOLO'ing..... and full on rape and murder.

I really think that MOST people would probably be doing what Penny was trying to do, get together with their families/loved ones and spend as much time as possible with them before the end came. Personally, that's what I'd do. If I found out I had 3 weeks to live, I'd spend as much time with my family/friends as possible and cherish every moment with them. I wouldn't go on a killing/raping rampage.

Those who want to go on killing rampages for nothing else than the thrill of it, are most likely going to be put down rather quickly by someone who is just trying to get back home to see their family.

I think there would be a lot less rapes as probably people would be willing to do it as much as they can, like the poster for the girl's virginity or the friend at the party attest to.

And like any end of civilization type movie, especially PA, I have always been of the opinion that the scum would wipe each other out pretty quickly. Looters would be getting blasted with home defense shotguns with regularity, and what is the purpose of people looting material goods, other than food or water, when none of that will matter in a few days?

As far as prisons goes, you wouldn't see mass breakouts. As the end looked more and more sett.ed, and while they still had a few staff coming to work, you would see wardens commit mercy executions of their entire populations, especially in your more medium and maximum security facilities. The world would be chaotic enough without loosing hundreds of thousands of hard core criminals into the mix.

Minimum security facilities would probably be different. They would probably let all the petty criminals and drug offenders out.
