Is Anybody Out There Doesn't Like Season 6?
I haven't been on IMDb for a long time!
I'm a fan of Adventure Time since the beginning, and I'm not too fond of the sixth season, though I know there are people who liked it. It was the season which pushed the show into a even more serious -- and philosophical -- tone since its creator, Pen Ward, stepped away as showrunner. It felt like that the writers largely abandoned the silly humor the show was known for in favor of symbolism a lot of people like myself don't understand along with questionable story decisions. This is the show that had Finn saying "Let's all be stupid forever" in the first season to a developing dark, yet enjoyable dark backstory of Ooo and its characters while keeping its trademark humor to the depressing tone of Season 6 shoved at your face -- and then there are episodes such as "Sad Face", "Chips & Ice Cream" and "Water Park Prank"...
The second half of Season 5 had some missteps because that is when Pen left, but there are some good episodes and Season 6 had started strong, but when the philosophical stuff kicked in as it went on, that was the first time in my history of watching AT I was completely lost. Another thing I noticed is while the sixth season started with strong ratings (3.32 million), but as it went on the ratings dropped -- the season finale was watched by 1.55 million viewers. I know that there's a current trend that people are ditching cable TV, but I don't think it was a coincidence. Since then, despite still being popular, AT never saw higher ratings it regularly delivered for Cartoon Network for much of its run.
I'm a huge fan of silly comedies, especially animated, but don't get me wrong -- I don't mind seeing something with a serious plot, and it has to be good. But I think AT made the mistake of going too deeply and emotional and not having enough laughs during the sixth season. It tried to be something it wasn't supposed to be. Thankfully, the people behind the show must have known it won't last and announced that AT would return to its roots for Season 7. The humor returned, but I was burnt out from Season 6, and it made me less enthusiastic about the series then I once was. But "Bad Jubies" premiered, and it was the first time I really enjoyed an AT episode. It felt like a Season 1 episode! I purchased the Stakes DVD without watching the episodes on Cartoon Network and it's way better than S6.
Somewhat related, recently we've seen a few animated series that started off as lighthearted comedies that later became serialized, with heavy plots and emotional moments in between. Even if these shows still produce "breather" episodes, those episodes mostly get shunned; the majority of fans only care about the episodes that raise a lot of stakes and giving them the "feels". I also feel like those shows are doing this just because it's the "in" thing to do now, instead of being true to themselves and sticking to their guns, and not be afraid of being a silly show.
So, what are your thoughts on this?
