question about the letters (spoilers)

If Gomex wrote the letters and sent them to the victim, why were they in his mother's house? Did he steal them back when he killed her? If so, why did he hide them in his mother's house? (I am assuming that was his room, though it looked like it was the mother's room.) If he wanted to get rid of the evidence why not burn them? Emotional attachment?
If that's the case, why would the victim have kept them? Did her husband know about them? In which case, shouldn't he have already been familiar with Gomez's name when Esposito came to talk to him? Did the victim keep this a secret from her husband?

Could it be that he wrote them but never sent them?

If he didn't steal them, could it be that they were marked'Return to Sender' or 'Addressee unknown' and returned?

You really misunderstood. Gomez did not write the letters to the victim. He wrote letters to his mother, which is why they were in her house. The investigators took them to figure out where he was.

Well, that makes more sense. I guess I'll have to watch it again.

The killer and the mother were fans of Racing, so Isidoro wrote letters to her mother telling things about his life on Buenos Aires, and using names of soccer player and situation of Racing to describe some of them.

I guess it is reasonable to assume that a mother in 1970s Argentina would keep letters from her son. We (in America anyway) live in such a throw away culture anymore it's sometimes easy to forget how precious those things could be. The protagonist was willing to risk his job committing a crime based on the assumption that this possible killer wrote letters to his mother and she kept them.

It's a little iffy, but I can accept it.

Full agree with Rodney post.

Well, based on the assumption that there would be clues to his whereabouts in his mother's house. It turned out to be found in letters he sent to her.
