I absolutely LOVED the dialog...

I'm not gonna write a review because there are like over 200 already, but I HAD at least to post a thread about the dialog. It really had my laughing a lot. Some of the ways that they were addressing each other and particularly the way the 'Judge' dressed the main guy down when he got busted, was just so damn funny! Very dry and VERY funny... 

I know! I finally watched this beautiful movie, and was so surprised about the funny scenes and dialog. That was so unexpected. They were 'imbeciles' and 'morons' all the time.

reply

Glad you liked it too 

The way the lines were said were just so dry, so matter of fact, so DAMN funny; and while the person was saying it, the person who it was directed to just sat there calmly taking it.

Good stuff!

Excellent use of profanity, and as you say - so matter of fact! Hilarious! And the scenes where Esposito and Sandoval was showing initiative ... the little house search had me in stitches. All in all a wonderful, wonderful film. I was expecting a rich and deeply moving drama about love. But the story was so much more: Obsession, revenge, crime, punishment, friendship, loyalty, corruption. And foul mouth :-) Puta and loco all the way!

Very well said m8! 

I have been somewhat surprised by some of the very excellent Spanish films that I've seen recently. Especially some great Horror films by Guillermo Del Toro or his proteges. The degree of subtlety, such as in this film, has been really amazing. I don't know, I guess perhaps I have been guilty of a degree of prejudice or something, but I live in Southern California about 30 miles North of San Diego, and all I've had to go on is Mexican television, which, to be as kind as possible, is at best, abysmal. So, anyway, I suppose I will do my penance, but I must say that I have been quite impressed with many of the Spanish films coming out in the last while.

I know little of Mexican film, but Guillermo Del Toro is surely great! And Spanish films have been impressive for many years. The last Almodovar film I saw, 'The Skin I live in' was hard to get out of my mind. A very disturbing, moving, bizarre experience. Being a Norwegian myself, I'm used to watch European films with subtitles, so it's really lazy when I so often decide to see yet another English language film or TV-series. There's so many interesting films out there from all over the world, and I'm going to open up to Latin American films from now on. 😎

reply

Yes, that Almodovar film was REALLY something all right! 

It's my turn to say: I'm glad you liked it (if you did, that is)! It was refreshing to see Banderas in something else than romance or action. He was really creepy, and tragic. I also knew Marisa Paredes from other films, but the rest of the cast was new to me, and they made a deep impression. Lately I've by coincidence been into a string of French films and tv-series, and it seems like they have a small problem with zombies and dead bodies turing up in broad daylight :-) ('The returned'/'Les revenants' a mini series, 'They came back'/'Les revenants' a film, and 'Les témoins' mini series. Dark matter indeed. But French movies have much to offer from all genres. Pity I don't speak or read the beautiful language. In my next life I'll be fluid in Spanish and French.

Sorry, I must've missed your reply before...

Yes, I did indeed find 'THE SKIN I LIVE IN' quite a unique and fascinating film. I don't know if I would like to watch a LOT of films with a similar subject, but this one was done very creepily and like you say tragically too. I THINK that I have the 'LES REVENANTS' film, but I'll hafta check (nearly 7000 films now, so...) Hmmm, French Zombies... I wonder what that will be like (probably just a bunch of aloof, snotty Undead people complaining about Americans... )

Korean movies have great, HILARIOUS dialog too!!

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

reply

Thanks kindly for the mention. Yes, I seem to remember seeing some Korean films that had similar good humour; I will definitely have to check some out. If you have any specific suggestions, please by all means do so. Personally for me, unless you suggest otherwise, I THINK like in this film here, I would probably enjoy the humour more in the context of an actual Serious / Crime / Thriller or Horror context as opposed to just a straight Comedy. But, please do recommend some good ones!

Cheers! 

Try Boomerang Family (2013), a Korean Movie. Another 'serious but funny' film by Almodovar I like is Volver (2006). Some Chinese films also share this kind of humour, but now I can't remember the titles—robably later.

Thank you! I'll check them out... 
