In the late scene with the cage, what's in the subtitles most commonly seen is wrong from what i hear.

the spanish subtitles say " pídale que aunquesea me hable" (ask him to talk to me at least), as if he is just utterly bored and, in the theme of a life full of nothingness, maybe it works. But what he says is clearly understood by most south-americans, i guess.

And i have heard it several times before posting. He speaks with a harsh voice and cuts words in a heavy accent, but he says in spanish:

Po favó (por favor) - (please)
pidalé (pídale) - (ask him)
pidalé que (pídale que..) - (ask him to...)
aunquesé (aunque sea) - (at least)
me haga vé (me haga ver) - (got me seen)

"Please ask him to, at least, got me seen (by a doctor)"

Its an idiom in spanish to say "Hazte ver (por un médico)" "Got yourself seen", in the meaning to get an examination.

So Gomez is sick, maybe terminal. Gomez is hunched, weak, and moves in slow motion to the back of the cage room.
Esposito looks around looking for answers and gets from the husband the:

"Usté dijo perpetua" - ("Usted dijo(cadena)perpetua") - (You said: life sentence).

also Cadena Perpetua is a level of sentence more o less equal to "for life", but literaly means "perpetual chain" (on chains forever).

Nope.

I'm from Argentina, and I can assure you, Gomez says: "me hable". It's quite clear.

Gomez is not sick. Morales took care of him all those years. If you look carefully the previous scene, you'll see he has several Medical books in a Shelf in his house.

Nice interpretation though!!

Uhmm... didnt notice the books... and books can help you to diagnose, but would not make you a chirurgeon. Medicines alone are not enough sometimes. How would Morales conduct an examination on Gomez without risking the whole thing anyway? A doctor needs to talk to the patient... needs to touch the patient...

Most important... Is that last plea in the book?? If so, then it`s futile to argue. :) i have not seen the script, if it is somewhere online.

Its just... I think I hear four vowels, E-A-A-E, ... Do you hear "Me ha-able"? I feel a soft "g" sound between the A's and I don't hear the "l" sound....thus "Me haga ve"
Maybe the accent is too foreign for me?. I'm peruvian, but we have lots of porteños in tv, and lots of argentinian movies and TV-shows on reruns here. And i'm forced to unravel accents everyday, I live in Lima!

El problema con el actor Godino es que el tipo es español, y a pesar de imitar bastante bien el acento argentino, tuvo alguna que otra frase en la que no se le entiende lo suficiente.

De todas formas, al final dice claramente "que me hable".

Hmm, I loved the last line from Gomez - everything about that scene was perfect.

I would be very disappointed to think he asked for a doctor instead of Morales to talk to him.

Also the movie just doesn't work as well that way - it can't be for a doctor.

It is such strange poetic justice, Gomez wants to be a big man (in more ways than one) and so he does a horrible and cowardly thing to a beautiful young woman, who is dearly loved by a good man. In the end Gomez, who probably has always been a sad and pathetic figure just wants someone to talk to, even the man who he is desperately jealous of, the man who got the sort of woman he was never able to get - in his bones Gomez knows that he couldn't get the girl, he is a pathetic man (exactly the way Irene provoked him) and then all he wants is to talk to Morales, he even seems to know he deserves his punishment, he doesn't ask to be freed, he doesn't ask for a doctor, he just asks for some tiny bit of human contact, but Morales won't give it.

It's almost like the scene in the Bible with the rich man asking Lazarus for a drop of water to cool his tongue while he suffers in hell.

The scene was incredibly powerful as it was - he must have said he wanted talk not a doctor.

I don't speak any Spanish and had been simply guessing these 2 crucially important lines-- (no offense to the actors, who do such a superlative job, one almost does not need words)

for me, even more chilling than discovering, along with Esposito, Morales' terrible secret- his imprisonment of Gomez- is the shock of 'seeing' that the life sentence has been reciprocal: Morales has turned himself into a monster; stolen 25 years from his own life; warped and crippled his own soul..

horrible. haunting and irredeemably horrible.

(and what a damning critique of the Peron era? in Argentina.. what happens when justice is thwarted by corruption-)
