Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts, + Chiwetel Ejiofor to star in remake

I think the original film is phenomenal. Not sure I like the cast for the remake. And I really have an issue with them changing a male character to a female character so Julia Roberts could take the role. I wonder which role they're changing... Romano? Pablo?

I hate it when they do this. I have refused to watch the remake of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo as the original is perfect and it's the same with this film. It's like trying to build a copy of the Goudi Cathedral in Disney world to make it more accessible. I hope you like my analogy :)

In general, I don't mind remakes, but in this case I think the casting is just... strange. Julia Roberts? Seriously? This story needs a more capable actress.
I actually saw the remake of GWTDT. I thought it was good, but the original was fantastic. Pure twisted perfection.
Your analogy is excellent.😊

I not only like your analogy, but also your EXCELLENT avatar picture!  I have the full poster, the original Lynch site big box DVD and...

Can you say, 'Hey, I just bought the brand new Criterion Blu-ray and had to change my PANTS!!!'

Cheers! 

The remake is actually closer to the book. I loved both btw.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

reply

chilon For me the remake wins hands down, much closer to the book.Rooney Mara portrays Lizabeth exactly the same.
The originals' Lizabeth was much "softer",even smiling

I concur; the original Swedish, Noomi Rapace TGWTDT is remarkably good, and truer in tone and characterization to the literary work. As much as I can appreciate David Fincher's past accomplishments, his effort with the remake are a hollow shell of it's predecessor.

I like remakes if they're done right. No problem with the casting except Julia Roberts, even if she's an Oscar winner... I don't think she fits into this story.

Break the rules and in a couple of years you will have a hell of a story to tell.

Neither do I. Julia Roberts' acting isn't intense or dynamic enough to pull off this material. I'm not sure about Paltrow either, however I think Roberts is terribly miscast here.

Two female leads and two black actors, and a third female Spanish actress... They're really filling their diversity quota. Is it to be a lesbian relationship? I'm confused. I'm sure it will be suitably terrible anyway.

I recently watched the Oldboy remake and it gave me nightmares.

According to the synopsis, the main characters' relationship seems to be the same in the remake: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1741273/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2. Maybe the legal counselor in love with his superior is Ejiofor.

I tried my best to sit through the Oldboy remake, but I just couldn't. It's hard for me to sit through most of Josh Brolin's performances though. I really disliked him as Dwight in Sin City: A Dame To Kill For.

Yeah. They just seem to have lifted the synopsis from the original verbatim though. I can't see where Julia Roberts comes in, unless she's the murder/rape victim... Maybe they haven't fully nailed the cast down yet, I know not.

I thought Brolin was alright. Thanks to sitting through the Oldboy remake though, I've now officially had my fill of Samuel L Jackson and his tired, expletive-laiden shtick. πŸ˜’

True, however we do learn that they won't change the original dynamic. We learn that the legal counselor will still be a man with a lady as his superior/love interest. But, as you said, they probably haven't completed casting as of yet. So, we may be in for a surprise or two.

Brolin is like nails on a chalkboard to me in most roles. I did enjoy his acting in W. though. Oh, Jackson did his usual bit? If nothing else, he's consistent. Tiresome, but consistent. LOL.

Oh man, this sounds so bad. The fact that Julia Roberts is in it makes it bad, cause the other two members of the cast could actually pull it off.

reply

OH NO.

I'm not totally opposed to remakes, but putting (ew) Roberts and (EWWWW) Paltrow together? Two of the least-deserving Oscar winners of the last 20+ years... this remake will be insufferable.

LOL at the "ewwwwws". Yeah, these two actresses together probably won't provide an entertaining viewing experience. I don't think either is a great actress either, however for me, Paltrow is a little more tolerable to watch on-screen.

I agree. I definitely think Paltrow's acting is better than Roberts acting.

Well, it isn't so much who is going to be in the remake; that doesn't bother me too much because I figure their pretty good at what they do. But, what I STRONGLY doubt is that as an American film if they will be able to capture the depth and subtlety of the original.

I just can't see it... 

About the ONLY way I think that they MIGHT be able to pull it off, and probably that is what they will do, is make it much more of a Suspense / Thriller, which of course will be completely different from this original. I don't know... This particular film seems to me only really to be able to work in the 'Foreign' Genre. The subject matter and primarily the approach of this director (including a VERY VERY slow pace for American films) I just don't think will work here unless they drastically restructure it.

Agreed, especially without the pervading political threat of the Peronist regime in the original, which is of crucial importance.🐭

Hmmm, that DOES indeed sound rather disappointing...

How can Hollywood remake any serious international film? I didnt realise till 20 mins in Id seen it before. Must have a mind like a goldfish.

A remake of a near perfect movie. Why don't they take a bad movie and make it good for a change instead of the other way around.

I agree. I think Hollywood takes great movies and does remakes in hopes of garnering Academy Awards. The original was stellar. I'll be surprised if this remake is better than the original.

At least they dropped Paltrow, if she was originally supposed to be in it. Not that Kidman is much better.
