I like the movie. I don't read the comics. I'm still pissed about the film's depiction of the Mandarin.
His early origins were actually pretty good, and I would have preferred they explore that, but chances are they didn't want to move focus away from Tony and to the Mandarin. In a post-AVENGERS story line the idea of alien power rings would have been less silly.
The One-Shoot ALL HAIL THE KING suggests there is a true Mandarin out there, but I very much doubt the MCU will go back to the Mandarin well anytime soon.

Yes, the one bad guy we think is the head of it all really isn't the head of it all, but not to the point where the "original" bad guy turns out to be such a turd as Trevor really is.

The point is that NO ONE figured out the twist. Everyone thought he was the Mandarin and there would be some battle with him at the end. No one figured out he was a drug addict who wanted more drugs and was nothing but a pansy actor with no real power or influence.
If they really wanted to use the Mandarin, they would have done more with him. But, had they done more with him in the movie they made, there would have been a lot of questions. By leaving him a bit vague, we don't know exactly what his powers are - until we find out he has none.

The depiction I wanted would have required an entirely different film. Killian is technically this film's true Mandarin. At least until that ALL HAIL THE KING decided to retcon that. Either to appease angry fans or they really didn't know how to end it.
