I've recently finished re-watching The O.C so thought I might give this show a try, however I know it has been cancelled. Is it still worth watching or does it end in a very annoying way? I mean I knew O.C technically got cancelled so they wrapped it up in Season 4, however the season have like over 25 episodes, where as Southland only has a handful of eps each season.
It certainly doesn't get wrapped up in a nice little bow, that's for sure. And the ending of the last episode that is now the series finale is not ideal and is/was a bit controversial, for lack of a better word to use at the moment, but it is ABSOLUTELY worth your time to watch all of the seasons. It's a great show and deserved to come back.
Couldn't you do something less drastic than sleeping with her? Couldn't you just kill her?
I disagree, even though it seems the majority of fans wanted the nice, neat little bow on the top to wrap it up.
I say, definitely watch the show, but keep in mind that it goes out with a bang and in the exact same vein it started- mirroring real life and gritty/violent aspect of law enforcement and the darkness in humanity.
I thought the ending was perfect. We got closure for some characters; we didn't for others. Things don't always go according to plan; That's life. That's Southland.
I believe we had enough backstory to our characters that we can make our own conclusions for what happens after the final scenes in S5's finale.
You disagree with what? That it deserved to come back?
I don't need a nice little ending for a show like this, but I absolutely wanted to spend more time with these characters, and the cast and writers were/are supremely talented. It would have been nice to see what else they could all do together.

Totally agree with you BSQuared. TNT is now showing the older episodes Monday at midnight...I started watching in the last season so it's great to see these characters before the end. They were a great ensemble cast & the writing was fantastic! I will miss it.
I disagree that it needed to come back. Would it have been cool? Sure, but it would've needed an end game regardless and 5 seasons for a show (especially a big budget, unpopular one like this, unfortunately) is good.
Most great shows don't last past 7 seasons, and have a well-written & planned ending. While I was disappointed that Southland was cancelled just on principle alone (because so much other trash shows get renewed year after year), I wasn't completely bummed, but rather extremely thankful that TNT picked it up after season 1 (when it could've died right off the bat) and gave us 4 more great seasons & a S5 ending that I feel is appropriate for the finale even if it wasn't planned. I personally feel that the S5 ending is perfect for the show's continuity & realistic, gritty depiction of life in law enforcement, on the streets and just dealing with all of life's issues that are planned or unplanned. When the last scene ended, I didn't say, "Oh know! Does he live or die?! I want more!" I actually smiled and discussed with my brother how awesome it was to go out with a controversial bang that wrapped up some character/story arcs and left others open, in true, Southland fashion & mirroring real life with unanswered questions or unexpected deaths. I didn't need to know if a certain character died or not; I didn't need to know if another certain character went back to being a "good guy"; I didn't need to know if another character hooked up with someone else. I took from it what was shown & what wasn't (since the show is so smart & always left lots of interpretation up to the viewer, despite showing in-your-face this-is-how-it-is on the streets stuff nonstop).
I felt that if the show did get renewed, it may have kept going without an endgame set, quality may have declined, or we'd get a bunch of happy endings that just wouldn't fit the nature of the show & what we've seen over the last 5 yrs.
I'm grateful to have seen such a great show, from start to finish- never a dull moment.
Well, I didn't say that it "needed" to come back, just that I felt it deserved to, and especially after reading interviews with the producers and Cudlitz, it's clear there was a lot more story to tell.
I don't think they ever would have gotten into "happy ending" territory even if they were given a final season order and knew they had an end date to contend with. Look at how The Wire ended; that's pretty much how I imagine Southland going out too, with the cycle repeating. Of course it's easy to imagine that happening anyway and I certainly don't need or want them to spell anything out for me either regarding Cooper's, Ben's, or Sammy's fates.
But the show, with the way it was set up, (if budget and ratings weren't an issue of course), could really have gone on for a long time, with new cast members added as officers retired or were killed in the line of duty and newbies joined the force. That's the type of show it was -- like you said, just depicting life rolling on through the eyes of police officers.
Don't get me wrong, I'm more than grateful for what we got too, especially knowing it was nearly gone after just the first season and I'm fine with things being left open ended. I just think it's clear that all the cast and crew were not only hoping for a renewal, but were planning for it too and I think they deserved an opportunity to go out on their terms. But alas, that's the TV business.
Thanks for your thoughtful reply.
