The fact that this show didnt have enough viewers shows most people...

..enjoy watching crap. Some of the highest viewed shows are utter garbage. There have been masterpiece television shows, like this one, that dont get the attention or viewership it deserves. What an utter shame.

I feel as bad as I did when HBO canned Rome. Albeit a bit graphic at times, that show was stellar. I still cant believe this show is done. And to end on a note that it did. Great acting, loved the characters.

Its really a shame that far too many people in America will spend hours each week watching some of the worst television and pass on good tv. I could never sit down and watch the Whoredashians, the Jersey Shore, ETV, Access Hollywood, Dancing with the talentless stars, and all this other worthless crap people spend time with. I will never understand how one could find anything entertaining in that crap. Its a complete waste of time and seems geared toward the sheep and dumbest among us. I guess that means there are just a lot of people out there that have low standards and frankly, arent very bright.

It's sad for those of us who enjoy compelling, intelligent television. We were actually lucky we even got as much Southland as we did.

I think Southland flew under the radar. I blame both NBC and TNT for this. It will be missed.

Breaking Bad ends in a few weeks too. There goes two of my favorite shows, both of which have incredible intensity.

Southland is aired at 3 am, so not a lot of luck catching it when aired.
The same with Chicago fire, so if overseas viewership counts in any way, the channel airing both shows aren't doping anything for helping it along.

It doesn't.

This will unfortunately always be the case. The shows which attract a relatively smart audience are not the shows that last.

We got 5 seasons though. That's better than most. I just wish they had been able to write an ending for the characters. It's all up in the air the way it ended.

You know what. I was thinking the same thing. I was a bit shocked when they decided to cancel this show. I was introduced to this show kind of late, because I was too busy watch Breaking Bad. But as Breaking Bad was ending I decided to watch Southland and I have to say it was very good show. Everything you pointed out in your post is exactly what is wrong with the mainstream. People enjoy watching rubbish on TV.

And HBO's Rome has some of the best acting I had seen in a very long time. But of course that was replace by the now horrible True Blood. I stopped watching TV until I saw Breaking Bad, but other than that I have given up on good quality TV. And don't go on about Mad Men, Glee, and Dexter, to me those shows can not hold to candle to Breaking Bad. Too bad Southland could not be on HBO or even FX. I don't understand how shows like How I Met you Mother and Dexter, can go on for 8 years or more. But Southland can only get 5 seasons and out of those 5, three of them were good.

Such is the reality of contemporary America, home of the lobotomized masses. Perhaps I shouldn't complain, since at the moment I'm watching more shows than I have in many years. That said, I have no idea who actually watches those pathetic attempts at comedy that fill so much air time. Likewise, I'd love to banish all the excremental talk shows and reality shows, especially the ones with so-called "singing." Watching a bunch of morons warble goofy pop songs is about as entertaining as Chinese water torture, especially with those crappy "judges," such as J-Ho, who wouldn't understand real music if it bit her in the posterior. The real irony lies in the decline of PBS/BBC dramas; too many of these shows have been scrapped for cheap reality garbage or things aimed at teens, and not particularly intelligent teens, at that. I enjoyed Southland, though it always seemed to air at times I couldn't catch it. I'm grateful to TNT for even giving us that one episode at 3 am, since it's allowing me to catch the episodes I missed.
