Similar shows

Learning that Southland was cancelled really sucked! I was hooked and I still feel like I need more. So do any if you know of any similar shows and/or movies?

The Shield.

As much as I loved the shield, it's like comparing apples and oranges. of course, Dutch would promote his own show. ;)

The Shield. The Wire.

For movies: End of Watch, Heat, Traffic, Street Kings, Training Day, Narc.

Take care, God bless.

Homicide: Life on the Street. The forerunner of The Wire and SouthLAnd.

Thanks :D

The Wire is diffidently on my list.

I've seen all those movies except Street Kings. Always figured it was kind of a B-movie. Does it really compete with the other five?

reply

Pretty much- it's not really a B-movie.

Street Kings 2 however...

Breaking Bad is my new favorite show (with Sons of Anarchy close behind). SOA is also done by creator of The Shield, Kurt Sutter, so if you liked The Shield you'd probably like SOA.

If you like crime dramas, then I also recommend Harsh Times- amazing performance by Christian Bale.
Also, different time periods but Scarface & Goodfellas are classics. Also check out Collateral, The Departed, Falling Down or even Seven for some gritty crime drama aspects. All of those are great, IMO< but they don't purely follow the police focus.

The intro to Precinct 13 remake (Ethan Hawke) was awesome, but the rest of the film is forgettable.

Take care, God bless.

Funny that you just listed some of my favourite movies:D I'll make sure to watch Street Kings, Harsh Times and Sons of Anarchy. Thanks:D

Not to nitpick because I'm not being a dick, but Shawn Ryan is creator of The Shield. Kurt Sutter was a huge part though, and became one of the executive producers/main writers of the show after a little. Just wanted to let Mr. Ryan have his credit where credit is due! Either way, I *beep* love Kurt Sutter, and him creating SOA is one of the better television experiences I've ever had.

Also, I love Sutter's acting roles in both The Shield & SOA. Specifically The Shield because he played a creepy, creepy man.

You are correct & agreed on everything else; Sutter created an amazing show with SoA & plays some great characters in his shows. Otto was pretty amazing from beginning to end- what a twisted, sad, powerful/emotional journey for that character!

Ryan created an awesome show with The Shield & yes- Sutter took the reigns late in the game for that one. Thanks for pointing that out.

Take care, God bless.

The Wire is excellent! I finished watching all of the seasons recently and it was through that search that brought me to Southland. I would definitely recommend it.

Everyone has a right to his/her opinion. Be thankful we have that right.

The Wire (2002)
Boomtown (2002) (also dropped by NBC without any official explanation)

Hill Street Blues would be my first suggestion. It was the forerunner of several of the others shows I've seen mentioned(All of which are excellent). To really get the feel for it, Hill Street would be where I would start.

Before Hill Street, there was Dragnet and Adam 12; after Hill Street, there was Homicide and the Wire.

Best Wishes,

Fitz
