What is this?

I thought this was supposed to be a serious drama. Someone even said in a review that this was the most accurate depiction of police officers they've ever seen. Come on? I can see they tried, but then they just suddenly go full on comedy, and what a bad comedy effort it is. I'm three episodes in, and already I'm sick of the cops acting like clowns all the time. Every five minutes they have to deliberately pull off something that real cops just don't do on duty.

So does it get better, or does it keep pissing all over itself?

Southland is NOT a comedy, it's serious drama depicting Los Angeles through the eyes of LAPD detectives and street cops in a realistic fashion. I lived in Los Angeles as an infant then child then adult from 1982-1986 then 1989-1993, and now as an adult from 2007-2015. And I have to say this show is an ACCURATE depiction of the hellhole that Los Angles can be, from a a civilian's standpoint and a cop's standpoint.

I've had former REAL cops (a former police chief of San Fernando) and a homicide detective tell me (Los Angeles county) that Southland is the most accurate and realistic depiction of cop life that they had ever seen. So I would take my and their words over anyone else's.

Yeah there may be bits of laughter and comedy here and there but this show is a drama point blank. I saw this show in it's original run from 2009-2013, syndication, and then on DVD so I know what I'm talking about. I miss this show everyday as it makes me glad that in 2015 that I'm leaving this asinine and dangerous city

Well put.

On the lighter side, I do know a cop, who was a bit of a clown and used to go take his cruiser of joy rides late nights and purposely spin out (on rural roads)... but he is different like that. ;)

Am I blind or just dumb? That's a great question, gives you great credibility right off the bat. No, I'm neither. What about you and your cop friends? If Southland truly is an "accurate depiction" then at least your cop friends must be the latter.

Well then, here's what I have learned about cops from Southland.
-It's ok for cops to yell out profanities to pedestrians from their patrol cars
-Sometimes cops will just laugh about criminal activities happening right in front of their face instead of dealing with them as they should
-Cops constantly undermine each others professionalism and argue in public, in complete disregard of maintaining professional credibility and authority
-Sexist remarks towards female officers are tolerated
-Fake strangling your fellow female officer in public is fine, no need to uphold the image of respectable police officers that people can count on
-An officer is apparently allowed to pretend to be carrying out a legally valid procedure as a distraction to deal with domestic disturbances, for example granting a divorce with his badge
-If a cop needs to bring his favorite actor in for questioning, it is ok to just share some cigars with him in the patrol car and then let him go
-An off-duty officer can wear his uniform, badge, gun and everything to a party and get wasted
-It's fine for a cop to shoot fully automatic illegal live ammo weapons in a populated area with a parolee
-Finding a fellow officer handcuffed to a bed in a party is a great laugh, especially since his gun has been stolen
-You won't be charged with stealing an officers gun as long as it happened in a celebrity party

That's what I learned in just three episodes. You cannot seriously tell me that that's accurate. I think the cops you talked to connected with the series emotionally, and just ignored all the stupid stuff. And that Johnny Knoxville look-a-like act-a-like, definitely there just for comedy. Pretty much half of the street patrolling so far has been just cops clowning around, neglecting their duties. How can any self respecting cop admit that this is an "accurate depiction"?
