Barbossa cuts his leg.... is he stupid?

Okay, so barbosa says that there were ropes all around and they were tying is leg... So, when he went for the cut, why didn't he cut lower, which would mean cutting the damn rope instead of cutting a whole limber off?

I assume that it wasn't just one piece of rope, but multiple layers of rope (which he did state in the movie). So instead of trying to cut through the layers of rope all around his leg pulling him back, he just made one quick cut. It makes sense.

You can't quick cut through bone, especially when it's yours :D

actually, with a good sharp blade, ya can. go check out videos of tatami cutting. a tatami mat is made to simulate the hardest part of the body to cut through, which is the thigh...

Yeah, but that's likely with a goddamn katana.

Go watch some Deadliest Warrior episodes; they spend all sorts of time trying to cut through ballistic gel dummies and pig carcasses and only a handful of swords were able to cut through in one clean chop.

You'd need something obscenely sharp and well-forced like a katana, or something heavier with a weighted tip. Those dinky rapier things just wouldn't cut it.

Nevermind the fact that you have much less leverage when hacking off your own leg. Much of the force behind a blade comes from the twisting of the body. You simply cannot generate enough power swinging a dull, rusty pirate sword with just your arm.

yes, tatami cutting is usually done with a katana or a nodachi. that said, when cutting with a katana, putting a lot of force behind the swing results in a broken blade, more often than not. katanas have been sold in popular culture as some kind of ultimate sword, for numerous reasons... but the truth is, any good sword, aside from, as you say, a rapier or similarly slender sword, will do the trick, if it has a good edge. and anyone who used a sword regularly, especially as good a swordsman as barbossa was shown to be, would not allow their weapon, upon which their life depends, to get 'dull and rusty'.
whether or not he could hack his own leg off with a single swing is questionable, but considering there are people out there who've amputated their own hand or arm with a pocketknife, i'd say it's not unreasonable to believe barbossa could do his own leg with a cutlass.
of course, there's also, y'know, suspension of disbelief... in a story with voodoo dolls, mermaids, the fountain of youth, etc., here we are dissecting the quality of swords and the toughness of human bones...

Cut the rope, other ropes ( or lower ropes ) can still come after him. Cut the leg, the ropes would just tow that way thinking they've got him.

In any case, shouldn't ve taking this serious.
