they had a good trilogy, but they had to ruin it with a lame and unwanted spinoff.

I feel just the opposite. They had a good start and then had two awful sequels. They redeemed themselves somewhat with the fourth film.

I like this film a lot. It's just a small adventure movie. Nothing big or epic.

It wasn't a spinoff. That would be like saying that Empire Strikes Back was a spinoff of Star Wars. It was just another movie in the franchise.

its a spin off, ESB continues the main character's story

I agree with the OP. In the first 3 films I would always be aching for the next part to come out just so I could find out what happens to the characters. The characters lacked depth in this horrible excuse for a movie. Didn't care for them at all, barely paid attention to them and don't care what happens to them in the future.
