I agree and that's from a non fans perspective(last night it was on tv and watched the whole thing - prev had seen the odd scene on tv particular the end with the Star Trek/Guardian of Forever style Fountain)
saw the first one on dvd in about 03/04 as so much fuss about it had to check it out and aside the bit where Jack steps off his boat at the start and the end something about them changing into skeletons can barely remember it but seemed fun (so if saw it again now would probably be like seeing it for first time) I guess its the best one like Raiders is the best Indy. the sequels 2/3 can remember how huge they were at box office making 1b each (when that was an extremely rare thing) and the 2nd one completely overshadowing Superman Returns that summer. didn't rent on dvd but from what saw the various times they came on tv (although no watch in their entirety) they seemed to be veering off into Star Wars/Matrix trilogy route regarding family saga with Bloom/Kira (with Depp as the han solo type) when the natural route for these films seemed to be standalone Indiana Jones style adventures with Jack in the Indy role. in fact think I remember at the time of 2/3 that was the general option that they should've gone the Indy route not SW - which this forth one seemed to realise with an Indy like McGuffin
not seen the 5th one but actually have it on dvd (got it on ebay cheap as part of a package with Cruise Mummy and TF:TLK). heard its like the worst one but will check it out tonight
