Good movie ** SPOILERS ***
Had no idea what the movie would be like, but I was very impressed for the first two-thirds. The story is about a couple whose daughter is killed, but then they find they can bring her back for three days -- but only three days.
*** SPOILERS ***
For the first 2/3rds of the movie, it focuses on the emotion of what the parent's are going through -- losing their daughter, getting her back, wanting to hold on to every extra second. However, at about the hour mark, it starts turning into a Stephen King movie (i.e. Pet Sematary) and it becomes about the girl killing lots of people.
It's a shame because if they had focused on the family and getting their daughter back and having to lose her again it could have been a powerful movie -- maybe not a traditional horror movie, but something deeper and richer.
The production values of the movie are a mixed bag. It's low budget and doesn't have a polished look. The acting I thought was pretty strong. The visual directing wasn't. The writer/director is definitely stronger with character than with shot selection. And the editing, especially in the suspense scenes and ritual scenes, was too loose. Honestly, if the last third had been better -- and given more emotion instead of going to killings -- I would have been willing to give it leeway, but they didn't.
But overall, a good movie that for the first hour I thought was pretty special. But the last 30 minutes were pretty lame.
If you like this movie there's another dead child/second chance movie called THE DOOR that is Dutch or German that's worth checking out too.
