She was so charming, charasmatic, sweet, enchanting, and so easy to watch in this movie. She is just SUCH a lovely and amazing actress! She definitely has "that thing" (screen presence) And her chemistry with Canet was off the charts!

Then there was Worthington and Mendes. Oi! Zzzzzz... NO chemistry whatsoever. I know most guys would take Eva over Keira judging by this board's comments on Keira's looks, but for me, the main problem with this movie is that Michael was supposed to be so smitten and attracted to Laura.. but Eva Mendes was so terrible in this film. Yes she is a verrrry beautiful and sexy woman but she had zero charisma, no charm, no screen presence and absolutely NO chemistry with Worthington. It was like she was just reading all of her lines. She droned on and her emotions fell completely flat. I remember seeing Hitch and it seemed like she had chemistry with Will Smith, but this was the wrong fit for her. Maybe it's just because Keira Knightley completely overshadows her. The fact that this movie interweaved the storylines and they'd go back & forth between couples, showed just how weak of an actress Mendes is compared to Knightley. KK had this spark & I believed Alex & Joanna's relationship.. whereas I didn't see an ounce of spark with Laura & Michael. They were both kind of dead behind the eyes.

Anyways I clearly have a huge girl b0ner for Keira Knightley but was majorly disappointed in Eva Mendes. I don't remember seeing any of her other films besides this one & Hitch so maybe she was just bored with this one.

I just CAN'T agree more with you, you have found the exact words. Eva is almost distracting as herself (kudos on the direction for not letting that happen). An Kiera was a dream, very talented girl.

He is a man in pain because he KNOWS his wife doesn't really love him - and he can't quite figure out why. He isn't the one secretly pining for his "lost love" - he married his wife honestly. But SHE didn't marry him honestly, at all.

It never occurs to him his wife is secretly "in love" (actually just obsessed) with another man - and always has been. What a terrible character the WIFE is - in this movie.

I found both Joanna and Alex as rather despicable characters actually - both sadomasochists reveling in their own "heartbreak" pain AND relishing the dismissive "power" (of withholding true love) from their respective significant others. They deserve all the pain and angst and unhappiness they will experience following their twisted "hearts".

My own "alternate ending" would be Michael realizing the deceptiveness of his wife - spotting her high heels on the floor - and walking out without a backwards glance.

cjlove, I only half agree with you. I second all you said about Keira. And I, a male, would prefer her, and would even take a chaste and perfunctory kiss from Keira over a roll in the hay with Eva any day. KK is perfect and endlessly fascinating to watch.

I do take issue with you on the Mendes portrayal though. She was probably cast, with her earthy sensuality, as a counterpoint to the effervescent Keira.

Let me offer one exhibit: The sadness in her eyes the morning after in Philadelphia was IMO very effective *acting*, and I thought she made the role bittersweet in just the right measure.

So while I will lift a glass and toast Keira's beauty and otherworldly charm with you any day, I'll also spare a nod for the sorrow effectively lurking beneath the surface of Eva's work here.

I love Keira and Sam. I'd have rather Sam have been her ex, not her husband, and they'd had the more emotional scenes. I don't care for the Frenchman who played Alex, and Eva was definitely out of place in this movie.

you are obviously a superficial person, i personally would spit into kiera's beautiful face if i ever met her, as a figure of speech. character is much more important than charm.

He's attracted to her, but definitely not smitten. If things had been going better on the home front (even if Joanne had been warmer and friendlier during that telephone call), I don't think he'd have strayed.

I do agree with you though that KK pretty much owns the film, whilst Mendes just plays "the other woman".
