Surprisingly Compelling [spoilers]
SPOILERS.
Just streamed this film on Amazon Prime Video for the first time and romantic drama's are not usually my cup of tea, but this movie was interesting from the very start.
"Last Night" cuts to the chase and it doesn't leave you bored.
Sam Worthington and Eva Mendez were clearly all about lust. Keira Knightley and the foreign guy clearly had an emotional affair for that very short amount of time.
Sam Worthington's character was feeling guilt, whereas Keira Knightley's character had guilt as well as old emotional feelings for her ex, her ex had the same emotional feelings minus the guilt.
Both the main characters could have chose not to go there with the lust and with the emotional affair. When Knightley met the ex outside the coffee shop, she should have left it there and said "nice to see you again, but i'm married, it would be inappropriate for us to start hanging out" not only that, she mentioned that she doesn't let go of memories of him sometimes, so that alone proves that it isn't a good idea for her to have anything more to do with her ex. Nothing good came out of her hanging out with him, what happened at the end of their short time together? emotional feelings got dredged up and she was feeling sad and literally in tears, the same with him, they both could have easily became confused after that, thinking that they're still in love with each other, if she'd have chose to be with him and divorce the husband, then fine, but she didn't, so she and the ex put themselves through emotional pain because they had a strong emotional connection and Knightley's character refused to have anything more to do with him (she ended things peacefully, but that isn't the point) it's clear he wanted to see her again, but she wanted to stay with the husband, so the entire short time spent with the ex did more harm than good, it caused more pain than happiness. It isn't a good idea to reconnect with an ex anyway, you're a different person than you were two years ago, who you were then is not who you are now! The past is gone and you inevitably move on and change one way or another.
It was also not a good idea for Sam Worthington's character to spend time with Eva Mendez character outside of work, he said in the hotel that they didn't think they would end up sleeping together, what did he expect? he admitted to his wife that he's attracted to Mendez, Mendez was attracted to him, they spent inappropriate times together (example in the swimming pool) it was a bad idea, they should have kept it professional, no hanging out and only talking to her at the presentation. He left early and didn't even stay for the presentation so it would have been better if he didn't go in the first place, especially if he's attracted to the other woman.
The end of the movie is vague, when the husband and wife hug he looks at her flashy shoes on the floor which could give him the indication that she'd been out somewhere and the way she looked at him - we don't know if she knew he cheated or not, it looks like they would not talk about any suspicions that they had and would just get on with their lives.
So after all of that, the film is somewhat depressing, but it was very intriguing still.
