Films and TV: why must the Turtles look like freakshows now?

I'm not even that big of a TMNT fan, but dammit this needs to be said. I know Hollywood is constantly trying to reboot everything. Purposely changing them because they think they can improve on the original, and everyone knows they can't. People thought the new Robocop looked bad, but Hollywood seems to be showing everyone it can do worse in record breaking time these days. So I present you something that makes the new Robocop design look good, the current TMNT.

On TV the Turtles are currently made out of building blocks http://television.mxdwn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/nick-tmnt-580x299.jpg.

In movies, the Turtles are the secret experiment of Frankenstein. I was expecting these guys to have their arms up grunting.

Seriously what the hell is this? The movie Turtles I was scared when I first saw them. No joke, they legitimately freaked me out when I saw them. If someone living in New York saw these guys out at night, I would honestly expect them to be scared. Are Hollywood trying to give little kids nightmares with these scary looking freakshows?

While the ones on TV look like it was a Lego production. I'm actually very surprised it wasn't. I caught some episodes of the show on TV, and I'm always expecting these guys to break into little pieces every time they get hit.

Can't the Turtles just look like turtles anymore? But no, this is Hollywood thinking they can "improve" on the original design while giving people unintentional nightmares at the same time.

I know, it's ridiculous and ugly. There have been different reimaginings of the Turtles in video games, in TV cartoons. None of them were as ugly as Michael Bay/Nickelodeon ones. Even the Nickelodeon 3d cartoon turtles look alright.
There was even a grundgy somewhat more "realistic" design in the Xbox/PS3/PC game about three years back. They looked more animalistic and turtle like and has scary faces but they were still not ridiculous. Those looked bad ass in a way. Only a total moron could have approved of the Muchael Bay turtles design.

Because turtles in real life are wrinkly and scaly and not at all like how the cartoons portray them.

I will say that Raphael looked the closest to the original Eastman-Laird design:

The closest to the original is the one from the video game which I described as "Grundgy". They actually do look like that and scaly. But still not ridiculous like the movie.
