Haven't watched since it came out: Mixed feelings

So I haven't seen this since back in April of 2013 when it came out, not sure how I got back to it but here I am lol. Anyways, I remember thinking the movie was good and really good horror. I thought the setting and mood were fantastic; it felt very creepy and had overwhelming sense of dread which is ideal in horror. The "scares" and how effective and frightening they are, get amplified by how effective the mood is. So through the movie all the scary movies really worked and got to me. Also, I vaguely remember an underlying message about addiction and/or something else this movie sorta brings up, and I always appreciated when a movie can do that well and not overly preachy or heavy-handed.

My biggest complaint from this was the plot and the fates of the characters from a storyline point of view and this is where my hazy memory fails me. But I remember really not liking the fact the main girl, who is the center of all these problems because of her addictions, is the one to make it out alive. I could deal with the friends getting it because hey it's a horror movie and people gotta die, but the brother should have been the one to make it out. A lot likely has to do with how I really could relate to him from a very personal note. Having family screw ups and wanting to get away from all that (especially as the youngest of my family) yet he's made out to be a jerk when he's not. All the hell he went through to survive and it's like nope, nothing you can do. Anyways, I need to watch it again because it is a good horror movie but there was that one aspect that digs at me.

Also people getting sensitive about this vs the remake, get over it, this doesn't change anything about the original so I don't get why you'd flip out and trash on this. I enjoyed the idea of taking some things and crafting it to make it a re-imagination of this sorta legend of the book in the movie and the evil spirits. I definitely prefer that than just taking the script from an original movie and making a few changes and poof movie remake, that's lazy and not really interesting. I guess you could look at this as an anthology where some aspects carry over but it's still it's own separate thing.
