If a book says 'Do not read'....

WHY DO YOU READ IT OUT LOUD??

I know its a film device of course, but in terms of the plot....come on seriously?!!

"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

There are people that will think "It's just a book" and read it aloud anyway. What harm has ever come from reading a book aloud? Actually, I think it's more of a "plot device" that the book releases the demon, and not that someone read the book aloud.

Never once have I read a book out loud and demons or whatever came out of it and started murdering everyone around me.

reply

Lucky. *wink*

But in all seriousness, in terms of the film, this is a book that was BURNED, BURIED, OBVIOUSLY TORN APART & RE-ASSEMBLED....covered in mysterious red stuff....and contains multiple warnings!
Including one that says Do Not Read!

In real life, I'd at least read it silently. Why tempt things more.

In real life i would never think. "Oh *beep* book might be hunted and might actually kill me...better not read it out loud". Reading it out loud might actually come natural..i find my self doing that sometimes as well.

If you're watching a horror film you know its bad but if you really found it you wouldn't care, you'd go wow this looks weird and cool.

reply

Safe to say the character Eric didn't realize he was in a horror film, much less an Evil Dead film. That might've changed his mind, had he known. The group should've taken Mia camping in tents instead. I hear Crystal Lake is beautiful. Lol

reply

Yea I mean let's take it for what it was. It's a horror film and what person would read a passage from a book and think that they all would start killing each other and demons coming out of the ground lol. Gotta stop knit picking horror films on dumb things that if they aren't done make the movie make no sense and therefore have no film. C'mon now. !!

THERES NO ROOM IN MY CIRCUS TENT FOR YOU !!

reply

Yeah...I agree. I felt the reason Eric read the passages where the same reasons Ash listened to the tape recorder in the original...basic human curiosity; and being Eric was supposed to be a teacher by profession, he would naturally be the one most curious out of the group. Its pretty simple but it worked to progress the plot.

Forbidden fruit is said to be the sweetest. Not in this case though, apparently. Lol

reply

Yeah, it's a horror movie but can people PLEASE stop writing horror movies--even remakes of beloved franchises--where idiots act like they have NEVER seen a single horror movie a day in their life? Just include at least one character with some friggin' common sense, religious respect, or simple superstition. Just one, and if they still get killed, fine, but at least I won't want to throw a brick at the screen.

Fede, on the commentary, uses the analogy that if you were to receive a message on your phone that reads "don't look up" you immediately would look up.

I think it also has to do with the promotion of the film. Fede originally presented the film as a something that you shouldn't be watching. When you see a movie that marketed as the most terrifying film ever, you'd go see it, and I'd you're here, you obviously did.

Gotta admit I kinda chuckled when the nerdy guy started reading the book. The first time he saw a warning I was like "OK, maybe he's a little skeptical" but then I saw warning after warning and I had to laugh. Reminded me of Willy Wonka going "No. Please. Don't...Stop."

reply

They have discovered bloodstains on the floor, burnt hair and dead animals from woodoo rituals in the basement. I THINK it is a bad idea to read it out loud. Even if it were a real life scenario and not a horror movie one.

reply

It's read out loud so all the children in the audience who can't read can still get it.

WHY DO YOU READ IT OUT LOUD??

cause a retarded movie needs retarded characters...that is why...

Not only that, but in Latin. Latin is never good.
