Anyone else prefer Evil Dead to be horror rather than comedy?

I think this film perfectly captured for a modern audience what they were trying to go for back when they made the original film. I personally don't like Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness. I mean, they're great films, but it's not what Evil Dead should be. I don't like Ash vs Evil Dead either. The idea of Evil Dead is a horror film, the whole trying to make it funny thing is irritating. Ash vs Evil Dead is like watching Scary Movie after seeing Scream. Its good, but it's self parody, poking fun at how scary Evil Dead could be. Bruce Campbell with his saying groovy, and his chainsaw, making fun of the demons and acting like a bad@$$...it just irritates me. He was the best character in the original Evil Dead, that's it. I don't know why they decided to make Evil Dead comedy after the original film, but I don't personally care for it. I feel like I'm the only Evil Dead fan that can't stand Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness or the tv show. The tone they had for the 2013 version is perfect. This is what Evil Dead should be, not a parody film.

Evil dead was never intended to be scary, it was intended to be a campy, cheesy, comedy/parody of scary movies. If you want scary, go watch other horror films that actually take themselves seriously.

Source? The original film is a legitimate horror film, I personally don't find it funny at all. Campy, yes, but that's only because the effects come off as dated compared to what we have today. I get an "Exorcist" vibe from the original Evil Dead. I don't get the intentional campy feel at all. I watched 1 and 2 back to back and the tone was night and day. The original was pure horror, the sequel was pure comedy.

I agree with the above poster. They definitely went for horror in a more pronounced way than any other film in the series.

Source?

The director. Ever heard of some guy called Sam Raimi?
As the other user said, it was never meant to be a straight up horror movie, which is what differentiated it from other horror movies.

If I don't reply, you're probably on my ignore list for something I forgot already

The original didn't even try to be funny at all. It was really scary. scarier than the remake that's for sure

reply

That's not true. The only reason Sam Raimi felt that he had to make Evil Dead 2 a dark comedy, is because he had to go to court for Evil Dead, due to it having been listed as a "video nasty". He did not want to go through that again with ED2, so he made that one funny.

The original Evil Dead from 1981 was by no means intended to be funny.

reply

Oh stop it lol. The first one was obviously a serious horror film.

This was a great remake and it is much scarier without the goofy humor of the original. I wasn't that interested in seeing another Bruce Campbell ham it up. This kept to the horror roots and offered a decent contemporary update. Nice job. For those who wanted more of the ham, they can watch the upcoming series which starring Bruce Campbell which should be stupid as hell.

"The Evil Dead" is the greatest and scariest horror movie ever filmed in history.

"Evil Dead II" was a serious horror movie with heavy black comedy hints.

"Ash vs Evil Dead" is a horror series full of splatter, with subtle comedy as added value.

Interesting take. I would put Evil Dead (original) in the top ten of all time scariest movies, but would reserve The Exorcist for #1. I think Nightmare on Elm Street is in that top ten, too. The Howling (first one ONLY, lol), scared the living daylights out of me as well.
