A question for those who think this was "crap" or "not scary"

What do YOU think is scary? Or does nothing at all scare you? Jesus... the original was pure 80's garbage; the "horror" scenes looked like something out of the children's "Goosebumps" series.

I don't think this movie was supposed to be scary. The gore and plot are comical. As was the original. Projectile blood vomit and lines like "your sister is being raped in hell" are not to invoke fear, but to cause laughter. You would have to be 12 to find this scary.

I enjoyed the movie for the absurd horror comedy that it is. Actual scary movies are movies that portray terrifying events that could actually occur.

I totally agree. I saw this in the theaters when it first came out. It was a first date with a girl I had known for a while, but never dated, and she picked it. I really wasn't paying that much attention, but it was pretty comical from what I did see. I'm not an insane horror movie buff, but at the beginning I gave the movie effort, but it was just horrible. So sorry for the actors, producers, studio, and everyone who sacrificed and put effort in to a movie that in the end turned out this bad.

Because this has lots of blood, and that's about it. Beyond that there's not a lot going for it. I didn't care about what happened to any of the characters, and the dialogue was horrendous. The addiction plot was stupid (although I got the metaphor they were going for), and the acting was pretty bad. I've tried 3 times to watch this and always seem to lose interest part way through, although yes I have finished it somehow.

The writing was just bland and uninspired, and I really don't get all the love people have for this movie. But hey, that's cinema. Id rather have horror movies I don't like than no horror movies at all honestly.

and the acting was pretty bad

The acting was FACTUALLY better than the acting in the original lol.
People who hate on this film seem to be confused.
Clearly they are just being bias because they are too in love with the original film.
This was a well done remake, like it or not.

Stupid characters? Hmmm kind of like in the original.
Bad acting? Better acting than the original (fact)

It was a good remake, deal with it.

Back in the day, it used to be more scary lol. Plus the original evil dead films werent supposed to only scare you (though it probably did scare many people) it had horror-comedy style to it, little jokes that Ash made after killing a demon for example...

The remake is more serious and I dont think the creators meant to have any comedy in it (some people still find some parts funny I guess).

In my opinion both movies are good but they are different. I like them both for different reasons.

What do I think is scary? If you mean movies and such, then I dont find anything scary anymore (when I was kid, I was scared of them)

If you meant generally... well thats a long story lol.

Why do you dislike the original movies? Did you expect them to be scary/regular horror moviess and you were disappointed after seeing its more of a horror comedy?

reply

I get why some people prefer the new one. The original is from a different era, and a lot of people aren't gonna appreciate the lack of production value and unintentional camp. Evil Dead 2013 is slick, polished, and intense. It's a very entertaining horror film, if not the height of the genre. But it's not Evil Dead. It's a modern studio horror film; it does not have the charm, ingenuity, or passion of the original films.

Well, there's lots of movies that scare me, but this wasn't it. It had gore and acting, but that was it. Pacing, music, and more importantly THE SCRIPT were terrible. And no, I won't compare this to the original because it would be utterly destroyed.

Hawkeye: Do you know how it feels to be unmade?
The Avengers

Give us some examples of this "terrible script"

Movies that scare me tend to be the ones that are creepy and stick in my mind. Relatively recent stuff like Absentia, Banshee Chapter, Penumbra, Calvaire.
This remake of Evil Dead... with its LOUD bangs every time something 'scary' happens... might make me jump... but that's about it.
The original creates a real atmosphere of gruesome menace that this remake lacked. Plus, the script had the characters doing so many implausible/dumb things that distracted from the mood.

I was checking out your list of films and noticed the pattern of indie choices. It's good that you can branch out and search for films. Honestly i only think Absentia is worth a look but opinions differ. i also think this has jaded your view of big budget "Hollywood" films. I saw the original when I was in my early teens and it scared the crap out of me, and I mean nightmares for weeks scared. I went into this film with that same attitude of big budget rip off will spoil the original feel. I was wrong. This is a good film, for it's own reasons. It's for todays audience with enough to pay tribute to the source. You should watch it again knowing you don't like it and see if you can find things in it that you may have missed the first time.

Well, you're looking at the original through 2016 goggles. Thirty years ago, this was terrifying to many people.

This was gory, not scary and the gore, whilst mostly good, was let down by the hand rip and chainsaw dummy at the end.

Scary are films like Exorcist, The Ring and The Autopsy of Jane Doe. Even the Descent - that was a mix of gory and scary.
