Olive was not a victim

We're all suppossed to feel sorry for Olive. She lied to her friend twice, pretended to screw the gay guy, dressed like a whore, acted like a slut, took gifts from guys to lie about screwing them, saved an adultresses woman's immoral affair with a student by claiming she had an STD, and then wonders why the Christian girl wants her out, even though she just claimed that she gave her boyfriend an STD. Maryanne by this point in the movie was her friend, and felt betrayed. Boo hoo for Olive

You've got the cause & effect reversed there. Micah blamed his chlamydia on Olive before Olive volunteered to take the fall. Olive still had no idea what had happened yet when Marianne slapped her.

reply

But still, he told Lisa Kudrow that "I can have an STD" and decided to go with it, not defend herself. Why would you say you have an STD when you dont, especially to save someone as awful as Lisa Kudrow's character?

reply

It wasn't to save Lisa Kudrow; it was to protect Thomas Haden Church. Olive didn't want to ruin the life of the only teacher in the place who seemed to give a crap about actual education by exposing his wife's affair.

reply

But the she does, only when it directly involves herself, after she put herself in the middle of it.

reply

Right, & she regrets it the instant she finishes the sentence.

reply

The one thing she regrets is telling him the truth. Someone deservescto know their spouse is cheating on them. The way she did it was wrong, but she was right to let him know.

reply

Exactly!

Ashmi any question

reply

Because Olive saw the pain that it would have caused her favorite teacher (Mr. Griffith) if he found out that his wife had been having an affair.

Okay, just some comments. Think of this as a cordial rebuttal

1. a)"She lied to her friend twice" - She lied the first time because she didn't want to going camping with Ri. Which, sure, wasn't the best thing to do, but what person has never lied to their friends? Especially teenagers. She didn't want to upset Ri further by explaining the real reasons why she didn't want to go (that she didn't feel comfortable around her parents), so she made an excuse. Yes, that wasn't the best way to handle the situation; but the point is everyone makes mistakes. Olive had no way of knowing the fallout that would come from telling a lie (which was done in part to protect her friend's feelings).

B) lie #2 Olive lies about having sex with the guy she pretended to have a date with. First starters, watch the scene where this happens. Ri automatically assumes Olive lost her virginity, then proceeds to *hound* her about it; despite Olive's protests. Could Olive have convinced her of the truth? Maybe, but she decided it was just easier to go along with her. Again, this was a mistake on her part, but it's not a *horrible* thing. Olive just misjudged the situation; didn't believe it was as important as it turned out to be. Really, she's just a teenager bragging about her sexual experiences, imaginary or not. This happens A LOT in contemporary society, and something to consider is this: If "Olive" had been an "OliveR"; would she have been as scrutinized?
2 "pretended to screw the gay guy" - Olive pretended to have sex with Brandon because he ASKED her to. He thought that if everyone at school thought he had sex with Olive, they would assume he wasn't gay, and therefore stop bullying him. Olive wanted to help a friend out - at this point, (to the appearance of the student body at least) Brandon would have only been the SECOND guy she would have had sex with, which doesn't make her a whore in my book. In fact, Olive deserves LESS criticism for this (imaginary) act than she does for her earlier lies; because a good 90% (I'd say) of her motivation was selfless - she wanted to help Brandon. Again, I notice no one is criticizing Brandon for pretending to have sex with Olive - doesn't he deserve at least EQUAL blame, if not more? (he did talk her into it)

3. a)"dressed like a whore, acted like a slut" - Okay, for starters I don't believe Olive's wardrobe *that* provocative. Okay, obviously that's what she (and the writers) were going for, but as far as things go, it could have been much worse. Second, and most important, I don't believe women (or men for that matter) should be judged by what they wear. Appearance does not automatically equal behaviour. Have you ever heard of "The Slut walk"? If not, cliff-notes: it was a protest movement, originating in Toronto, about how women are judged as "sluts" just on how they are dressed, and how this affects how people treat them. Just because someone dresses a certain way does NOT give ANYONE (male, female, straight, gay) the right to make assumptions about them.

b) regarding Olive's supposed "acting like a slut" - in what way do you mean? Which behaviours did she exhibit that you thought were "slut-ish"? I'm honestly curious, I feel like I can't properly argue this unless I have something specific to argue.

4. "took gifts from guys to lie about screwing them" - Most of the guys she was lying for were like Brandon - social outcasts who were hoping to improve their social standing by pretending to have sex. In some ways, Olive believed she was "helping" them, as twisted as it may be. Yes, she demanded "gifts"; but what she asked for was not that demanding, she accepted whatever people were willing to give (she took the coupon, and the almost-expired movie passes). Yes, this was not the best thing to do, but the guys she was taking gifts from were WILLING; they accepted her terms and were happy to fill them - as long as she filled their requests as well. In that way it was a mutually beneficial agreement, both parties got what they wanted. Yes, it was not a GOOD thing to do, but it shows the effect social pressure can have on people. These guys were so desperate to gain any kind of social acceptance, that they were willing to "pay" a girl to *pretend* to have sex with them. Sure, Olive isn't a necessarily "good" person for doing what she did, but it doesn't make her a bad person either.

5. "saved an adultresses woman's immoral affair with a student by claiming she had an STD". As I believe someone already said, Micah had *already* claimed he got his STD from Olive, the guidance councillor was going to come clean, but Olive offered to take the fall because she wanted to save her marriage. Again, Olive thought she was doing a good thing, however misguided her judgement was, her intentions were pure.

Olive was not a perfect person, and she did make poor decisions. However, this does not mean she does not deserve pity. She tried to do the right thing; she tried to be a good person. However, she wasn't a wholly selfless person - she asked for things for herself, and did things to please herself. However, in this Olive is nothing but human. She's a teenage girl trying to find her place, trying to create an identity. Yes, she makes some bad choices, and does some bad things. But underneath that, she's a good person, with honest intentions. She just got caught in something bigger than herself; misjudged how out of control her actions would become and suffered extreme social ostracism because she refused to back down - she took what people threw at her and threw it back harder. That took bravery and someone like that should be celebrated, not insulted.

Olive lies to her best friend by telling her that she spent the entire weekend with a guy from community college. Her best friend naturally assumes she had sex with the guy so Olive stupidly decides to tell her she did. She then later acts like it was no big deal and it was a one-night stand.

Olive is not a victim. She could have told Ri that she wasn't comfortable being around Ri's topless parents. Surely, Ri would understand. And if not, Olive could say that she was doing stuff with the family.

The gay guy was bullied for being gay. The logical response would be to sick lawyers on the principal. This is obviously a liberal town and the principal would be fired. As for the guy punching him, that's a hate crime. Problem solved there as well. And if the gay guy is being bullied so much, he could work out and take from self defense classes.

It's the fat guy's own fault for being fat. He could stop eating so much and exercise.

For all the reasons you stated are why I feel sorry for her.

reply

I agree why go through all that trouble to lie and then take it all back. Kinda dumb but still really liked the movie.

I think you may have missed the entire point of the Olive character OP. Olive is presented as being emotionally and intellectually mature far beyond her peers. She herself is aware of this, but considering she is still a teenager and a HUMAN BEING she is still imperfect as there is no such thing. Everything she does in the movie is influenced by her wanting to fix things and be a good person. The means by which she does them are definitely not the greatest, but she feels that they are. For every mistake she made she took responsibility and understood her errors.

I'm always dragging that horse around...
