What was Olive's status before?

This movie does remind me of John Hughes movies mostly because they start in the middle of the person's life without explaining much who they are. Apparently people know who she is that they make such a commotion about her. Like Ferris Bueller and his popularity.

She said at the beginning that she was barely noticed. Which, like many other people i'm sure, i just find that hard to believe. She was an attractive, well dressed girl with a personality and good body. Oh and an attractive, slutty friend. HOW.. ON.. EARTH c/would someone like her barely getting noticed??!
