Creepy Teacher.

I don't have anything against the actor. But Emma Stone's favorite teacher seemed a bit creepy to me. And his wife was creepy in a very different way. I didn't get these characters or what kind of people they represent in real life.

Also, i saw this on TV and it seemed like they just sorta dropped whatever plotline involved the favorite teacher. Maybe something got cut out do to time constraints? I saw her tell him about his wife cheating and then he walks sadly off the campus. That's about it. She mentions him a couple more times in conversation, but i guess we are just supposed to imagine things got awkward at that point?

It wasn't like they were boding on a creepy level, he just saw her as one of those students who's not into what most of the young crowd is into nowadays, like that one line about facebook, to me the scene where he walks away was most likely he loved his wife but never knew she was in the down low, he didn't really leave off campus, he just left to be alone, you might have seen that at the end. The guidance counselor slept with the young lad because of a woman's insecurities of herself aging, thus the sleeping around, albiet a stupid reason, she was pretty vague on the details though. though I did thought when i first watch the movie , yea i thought there would be a plot where she like has this personal crush on him. thankfully the movie didn't fall on that predictable trope and kept on surprising me from beginning to in, decent romance comedy and one of my favorite chick flicks, and yes I am a guy

I liked the movie too. I just thought the teacher seemed a bit creepy to be a favorite teacher. The way he talked and when he just appears in the lunch room while Emma Stone is eating her potatoes in a promiscuous way. He's just staring at her, maybe in disappointment, but it was the same look he always had on his face.

Also, you are right, he didn't permanently leave the school, he just temporarily walked off to clear his head. I'm not sure what we were supposed to make of the ending to the teacher's plotline. Was he going to forgive his wife? Is he just going to be a sad shell of himself for the rest of his life? I'd have liked a better wrap-up to that part, even though it's not critical to the movie as a whole.

He wasn't creepy at all. He was portrayed as one of those teachers who cut through the crap with his students. He was respected because the kids saw that. I could spot a phony from a mile away when it came to my teachers. You know... the teachers who try to fit in with the cool kids because you were sure they were wanna-bes when they were in school.

He genuinely cared and he could see Olive for what she was - way more intelligent and mature than her peers. When she started acting like someone she clearly wasn't, he called her on it.

Georgina: Are we safe here?
Michael: Does Albert read?

Maybe it was his monotone voice that creeped me out. Or the fact that his voice doesn't really go with his appearance. Not sure.

I'm not bashing the character. The character seemed like an alright guy, he just acted a bit creepy for a high school teacher.

Maybe it's creepy because the teacher seems to understand Olive better than almost everyone else and visa versa.

Maybe he was creepy because he is Sandman from Spiderman 3! Remember?

Was he really? I can't believe i'd miss that. And given how much i love Spiderman movies but hated Sandman's character/plotline/everything, i see how i would have blocked out my memory of this actor.

Finally someone has resolved this for me. Thank you.

I think the problem is society. If the role had been a woman, who understood Olive, and gave her advice. People would like her and see her as a cool teacher that is involved with her kids. But when a male takes on this role, we see it as creepy that he is so involved with a FEMALE student.

It is kind of sad, but im sure its something male teachers deal with all the time. Im interested in becoming a teacher, so i went to this forum for teachers, there was a discussion on elementary teachers hugging their students.

Most of them said they would only hug if the child initiated it, but the one male teacher that commented said he had a no hugging policy just to avoid misunderstandings.

I can understand why people would be concerned, but there are also female pedophiles, its sad that only men are put under the radar like that.

reply

You are right about this. Our society does put a negative stigma on grown men showing emotion and there is a fear of male pedophilia.

I did think that at the beginning, thought he'd end up wanting a piece of Olive.
Afterwards I think he was just trying to be one of those cool teachers who wanted to be everyones friend..

Why do you have to "get" every character? Sometimes characters exist just they have a role to film. I mean, you can't really have a movie about school without a few teachers, can you?

And maybe they don't represent anything in real life. He was just a teacher that tried to be cool with his students. Nothing more.
