In what universe is having sex in high school a huge event?

Finally got around to watching this. Cute movie and I like the main two cast members, so no crime. It was fun. But having sex in high school is far from rare. More common than not actually. It is certainly not going to have the whole school reacting and texting about some loner that does it like it was a "holy cow" moment.

I just couldn't get over the fact that this wasn't set in 1950 when maybe it would be a big deal. It seemed absurd that anyone would even blink over it

Well if people think you sleep around a lot they will start to view you as they did Olive. I don't think anyone cared that she was having sex (aside from the religious group and her best friend who was just jealous that Olive 'lost it' first). People started saying stuff because they thought she was hooking up with a bunch of guys. Even in college I've known girls who got negative reputations because they slept with so many guys. I've known guys to get a bad reputation too and be known as a man whore.

Also I think it was viewed as out of character originally for Olive to have sex. And I can see how everyone was talking about the first time atthe pparty because she and that guy were making a scene out of it. That will definitely get people talking.
