Bizarrely Naive

If this film was from the '50s, then MAYBE I'd buy that a bunch of 17-18 year olds (that look 25) would be utterly astonished that someone had had sex, but c'mon, this film was made in 2010 and set in the present day! I left high school in the '90s, and here in England you leave high school aged around 15-16, and even THEN it wasn't a big deal that people were sexually active, so I dread to think what the ACTUAL state of high school sexuality is now, especially since I seem to see a lot of stories about kids in single digits of age sharing nude photos/sexual text messages with, and 'sexually bullying', eachother.

This movie would never have been made in the 50's are you kidding me?! And it wasn't the fact that she had "sex" with one person, it was the fact she was having "sex" with everyone in the school. Yes kids do have sex in high school, but girls who do have sex with dozens of guys are sluts. It's true.

as soon as Olive tells Ri that she had sex, it spread through the school. The rumours spread faster as she "slept" with more and more guys. I'm from a small town and back when I was in high school losing your V-card to a one nighter was a hot topic but I can't imagine in a large school it would be that big of a deal then or now.

I mean if a film with this subject matter was made in the 50s obviously, and as the other person pointed out, they're all awestruck when she'd only supposedly had sex once. Even if that wasn't true though (which it is), seriously, you're saying that people in today's high school generation go all "hushed tones and open mouthed bewilderment when she walks past" amazed at girls that are known to sleep around? Really?

reply

I think it's more the fact that it was Olive having sex. When Rhi asks her, she says "I'm not that kind if girl." People were probably really surprised because it wasn't something they expected from her. If that makes sense...

If Olive were having sex with a long-term boyfriend from a similar "social class" - honor roll, good family, etc. it would not have been that big of a deal.

The fact is that she was behaving in a way that was unexpected of her gave her a temporary fame - and the further rumors allowed that fame to continue.

I think they were more astonished that her date, who was rumored to be gay, was having sex with a girl.

But FullPageNude was right to some degree. These people were bizarrely nosy. Not only were they extremely shocked that the gay guy was having sex with a girl, but -- holy cow -- listening at the door to "make sure" they really did it? Why would anyone care that much?

The reason people were so vested in Olive's sex life basically comes down to their own needs for diversion and misdirection. They'd rather think and talk about Olive's sexual conquests than examine their own problems.
