Anson gave off a rape-y vibe...

This always bothered me about the scene in the parking lot.

He advanced on her four times.

After the second time when she said "STOP" and pushed him away, he went in two more times, saying "It's okay".

Maybe I'm becoming more sensitive about this after watching too much Law & Order SVU.

I think thats the point of that scene...

"...I'm a contradiction"

reply

Was it really?

I thought this was supposed to be more light-hearted.

reply

it is, but it has to show the darker effects of playing off ppls expectations like she does

Hmm, I suppose.

Thanks for explaining. =)

Great post. You're both right.

Or maybe it's about why other people don't *get* to have "expectations" about your own body and what (or whom) you choose to do with it.

That's not even getting into the fact that she wasn't actually "doing" anything, while plenty of other people at her school were getting up to all sorts of antics with far worse consequences, but acting as though those action and consequences didn't exist.

If you really think Olive was the one who was messed up in this film, you really missed the point.

People *get* to have whatever expectations they want of you, your body and even your dog. You don't *get* to tell other people what expectations they are *allowed* to have, regardless of what they are.

People can have whatever opinions about you they like--as long as they keep those opinions to themselves. Should they act on those opinions to where that causes you harm, then they lose the right to those opinions and can even go to prison for them. Thinking Olive is a slut is okay. Attacking her or inciting others to attack her? Definitely not okay. In fact, if someone makes a physical attack or does something that can be construed as psychologically harmful, that is criminal behavior.

As for expectations, unless they are her parents or legal guardians in some way, or have some other legal hold over her, nope, people don't get to have expectations about Olive's behavior as long as it does no direct harm to them. Certainly, the other students don't.

As the old saying about the Constitution goes, your rights end where another's begin.

He totally did.

It was totally rapey. That was the way it was intended to be. His character was demonstrating the unfortunate and yet common idea that a woman with a reputation for being "easy" always wants to have sex. And so he was ignoring her boundaries and treating her terribly.

It is a dark scene and intentionally so. It's the beginning of the turning point of the movie.

I did.
It was like all of her expectations [of a good guy date] were flushed down the toilet in a flash.

I wanted to hug her. :(

Of course it gave off a "rapey" vibe. And of course that was the point of the scene.

But, you already knew that. You weren't really asking that. You just wanted to point out that it was "rapey" (it was way too obvious for anyone that knows how to operate a computer to miss).

I bet you also don't think Olive bared any responsibility for how she was treated (you wouldn't have been so disturbed by the scene otherwise).
