Whose voice was that on the phone? (SPOILERS)

Question: Who called DonMcKay pretending to be the dead guy, warning him to get out of town, that he'd been duped, etc.?

It doesn't make sense that it was the fake nurse and her detective-husband, because IIRC, they immediately try to pull him back INTO their schemes. If they were planning on him marrying the girl then blackmailing him, wouldn't scaring him off be counterproductive?

I focus on the detective because he's the only male character in the movie that could have called him. If not the husband, who--the cop? The taxi driver? Otis faking a "white guy" voice?

I'm totally confused. I kept expecting it to turn out that the husband survived, especially since no one seems to find his body. (It's never mentioned by the police.)

It was Mel, Maria's husband/private detective. They called to get Don out of the house so they could grab him (you can see their car waiting at the end of a side street for the cab to pass just before it does, so they could stop it).
