What's with all the references?

I am currently watching season 6 on Netflix, and in one episode they have "Mona Vanderwall" from Pretty Little Liars complaining about the "Queen Bee" calld "Ally" and how she bullies the rest of the girls.
Next episode they ask who the prisoner accused of treason is and Greyson says "Abu Nazir" from Homeland.
What gives?

Well, nearly all popular shows use guest appearances.
And from the beginning of the series, references to popular culture (models, singers, Twitter, FB, fashion, etc.) has been a factor because Deb knows so much about it.

Why not put them in? It is clever and can get crossover audiences
