Whew, some problems, but I think it deserves better than 5.3 (Spoilers)
Well, chalk this up as another brutal movie to watch - brutal for two reasons the content and some of the filming.
Why filmmakers include segments prolonging a scene unnecessarily so is beyond me - for example, a fire-side bantering chat goes on much too long, and then another scene of the main character retching while draining the body of her rapist goes way beyond adding anything more - I did read an interview where the main character actually became sick during the scene. Still, with tighter editing of scenes like this they movie probably could have been shortened by ten or fifteen minutes.
One thing I missed was how the main character fed her sister ashes from her hubby in the ice cream at the end.
One part I found irritating was the ambiguous ending. I think filmmakers when using the "unreliable character" need to make sure of the clarity of whether things happened or if they did not. To further clarify, when using such a plot device, ensure the viewer KNOWS if the tale did or did not happen one way or another.
Still, I think 5.3 is a bit low. The filming was excellent and for it being a low-budget film, the special effects were amazing. The corpse of the rapist was something when she was cutting up his leg and I read an interview where when the camera focuses on his feet when he was being hoisted up, that they were fake feet - in fact, the entire corpse at one time was a prop that was made of the rapist.
