Tidbit: it used to be that using real money on film technically ran afoul of the wording of the counterfeiting statutes and fake money was always used. I'm almost certain this is no longer true though.

You are correct. Real money OK in film, counterfeit money a no-no unless marked as counterfeit/fake. Remember counterfeit currency is more problematic. A man in North Carolina bought ~$150 of groceries with a $200 Bill with George Bush on the face. He collected ~$50 in change and exited the store trying to control his laughter.
