Scientology
Is Shaw supposed to be an allegory for or some commentary on David Miscavige, head of the church of Scientology. Kevin Bacon looks and talks like him in the movie, and the themes of evolution and mental abilities beyond regular human beings seem like they would be fitting with Scientology and how Scientologist are the next evolution of humanity.
