Clarify this

In the movies, they always explain Magneto's power by saying 'he can control metal'.

My understanding was always that in fact it is magnetic fields that he manipulates.

These are two very different abilities with different implications.

So which is it?

If it's just metal, then some of the complaints about his ability to pull himself toward metal objects and fly etc. make sense. But if he can control magnetic fields his powers should be far more broad. He should be able to generate/disrupt electrical activity, for instance.

reply

Basically, he can do both.

reply

This.

Not if you figure he had his suit lined with a small amount of metal. As far a flying goes, he doesn't ever swoop or do any real maneuvers. He basically goes up and down or at a slight angle while standing upright.

That would suggest he's got metal in the soles of his boots and he is just riding on the metal sort of like how he did when he escaped prison in X2.

reply

Also we have iron in our blood and there's iron in the earth. I always thought he just manipulated the iron and the magnetic poles

reply

Seeing that Mystique had to add a whole lot of iron to the guard's body in X2, I doubt most people have enough iron for him to do anything with.

reply

Not the iron in the blood alone but also the iron in the earth and the magnetic poles. In the x2 movie he was in a plastic prison no metal anywhere and most likely no access to the magnetic poles

reply

He can Manipulate ferrous metal, sense it, and manipulate Magnetic fields like making a shield around himself or others.

In the Comics his range of control has waxed and waned.

He certainly should not be able to fracture diamond with bed post metal, Diamond is much harder than that.

The Bed was supposed to be Brass BTW and that's a non-ferrous metal which is rather soft.
