First scene with Kevin Bacon

Isn't he fantastic?

My goodness he's one slippery snake, right from the get-go. What a phenomenal villain.

reply

Oh, yes. I think Kevin Bacon turned in a very effective performance as Sebastian Shaw. He made for a very menacing villain indeed.

reply

That first scene, with him as the old Nazi scientist, was his only good scene in the movie. Every scene with him after that was completely phoned in.

reply

Funny thing is Bacon played a supernatural-ish villain also called Sebastian in Hollow Man...

Life is like a beautiful melody, only the lyrics are messed up.

reply

Bacon was not right for that role. He's not an alpha male dominant type. My first choice for Shaw would be someone like Lee Marvin, but he's too old, and he's dead. I suppose they offered the role to Russell Crowe but he turned it down. Bacon can play a villain, but not an alpha mastermind trying to blow everything up. I'm not sure who else would be right for it at the moment.

A hybrid of Ralph Fiennes and Mark Strong.

made you look!

reply

I disagree respectively.

To your point about comic book Shaw, you're correct, but for the cinematic version I think Bacon was brilliant.

The onscreen version of Shaw was meant to be a slippery and slimy mastermind, not an alpha male superior. I never really understood the reason for drawing Shaw like a beefcake muscle man. He absorbs ENERGY, not mass. So he doesn't need to look like Superman's half brother. He can look like a slinky and still throw people around like dolls.

very powerful scene. it'd be easy to make something like that look goofy. but they pulled it off. i could really feel young Magneto's anger/shame.

reply

I thought he was terrific, i'm really glad a terrible one note hack like Rusell Crowe didn't get it. That man is dictionary definition *beep*

reply

Best actor in this movie. Would watch it again just for him.
