Fassbender on Cuba beach

Haven't seen the movie in a while and just watched it.

Did anyone else notice the Irish accent that Magneto had in the last few scenes on the island?

Especially the part: 'I've been at the mercy of men just following orders. Never again!'
It's awesome but does not fit with Magneto at all...

Yup. Was just waiting for him to say "top of the morning to ya"

Hahaha!

Seriously, what the hell happened?

It's the climax, big speech, and nobody thought it important to say "hey, your accent is doing things, let's get this right, it's a vital scene".

So jarring...

during that scene, which is probably the most important one of the entire film, all you could think about is the accent of the actor ?

reply

They weren't the only ones, it's very noticeable so it's understandable why someone would point it out.

I noticed it too when I fist saw this in 2011 and there have been many others who noticed it as well. A few articles and reviews even mention it.

Fassbender even addressed the accent issue, initially he intended to follow McKellan's English accent but Vaugn said to just keep his accent as it had an international neutrality to it. So Fassbender decided to more or less keep his accent but lessen the Irishness to it which unfortunately came out pretty thick in that scene. He has since decided to just use an English McKellan accent to avoid slipups.

Yeah. I'm surprised they didn't do ADR to get rid of Fassbender's Irish accent. Still enjoyed the movie anyway.

reply

It's possible that they shot this scene before most of the others.
